2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The hitch itself is 5 stars. The instructions were lacking a variation for Club model that required a considerable amount of additional trim cutting to access the hitch pin hole and safety chain loop. Also and not a knock to the hitch itself, it did not play well with my aftermarket exhaust. Some longer hangers gave it the necessary clearance, though.

2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Great fit, good instructions and video. I used ramps in the driveway and installed in just a little over 2 hours.

Had it installed. Installer said there were no problems. Works great so far with my bike hitch rack.

Comments
I only use it for my bike rack, but it is still working great after a year.

2013 Mazda Miata

This was a very tight install on my 2013 Miata MX-5. My neighbor helped me and we did have some difficulty with lining up bolt holes. We did not have the luxury of a lift as your instruction video showed, so it had another degree of difficulty as well. I have used it for my bicycle rack now several times and it is very solid. I do hear a bit of clunking against the muffler when I hit some rough spots in the road. I believe this is unavoidable with the close fit.

by:
2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Easy to install (did not have to drop the exhaust).
The draw bar is very tight to the rear valance so I had to cut out more than the 3/4" recommended.
Installing the bike rack bolt is still difficult so I may make some adjustments but the hitch is as high under the body as possible and that makes it a good design.
Very pleased.

2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Good design, but the workmanship is unacceptable - welding, too much beads at two holes, and the alignment was off. Please get your stuff together, and make America proud!

Comments
I apologize for the welds. Sometimes powder coating can cake in corners and edges and may need filed. The alignment is caused by flex in receivers that can be realigned by bending with a vice or open step. Here are some other tips:

In my experience aftermarket parts tend to "almost fit". There always seems to be something that is close, but not quite right...something that needs to be bent or filed or cut to get the part to fit. Not so with this hitch; it's a perfect fit, and the quality and finish of the part are excellent.

At first glance, the instructions are not clear, but then you realize that there isn't a lot of detail because the installation is very simple. The only "issue" run into was that they suggested dropping the muffler out of the hangers to allow more working room. This wasn't necessary, and I ended up putting the hangers back because the muffler was in the way of the brackets.

The only think I wished the kit included were plastic plugs to replace the factor plugs that were removed (you need to elongate the holes so the factory plugs won't go back in). I found some body plugs from an Audi that worked perfectly.

2011 Mazda Miata

I had a professional install this on my 2011 Miata using the online instructions, he was done in less than a day and for far less than I expected. It is very unobtrusive. You wouldn't know it was there unless I have a rack on it. I have zero complaints. It has been holding strong for a year now, with daily use (one bike) of a Thule rack for 6 months straight. You can see that the installer didn't make quite enough of a hole in the bumper for it to fit into, but I am fine with that, since the bumper seems to sit on top of it without issues.

by:

Had it installed, mechanic said no problems , very good instructions and video.

by:

After a year of occasional use the hitch is working well on my MX-5 2008. The hitch is hidden well and stable enough to carry a set of bikes or hitch carrier with ease on long road trips. Great buy. Still enjoying it. NO rust either, but I admit I mainly keep my car inside my garage. Installation was a bit challenging but after a few hours of playing with adjustments and adjusting holes to bolt in perfectly, it was all worth it. I'm very much a perfectionist when it comes to my MX5 so others may complete the install faster.

  • Place to Install Curt Trailer Hitch on 2013 Mazda MX-5 in San Diego, California
There is a place called San Diego Trailer Supply in the San Diego area that could perform the installation for Curt trailer hitch # C11028. Or any trusted mechanic or RV dealer with a service center could perform the installation as well. I have included a link to a video showing how the hitch installs and a link to the instructions. Using these links you might determine that installation is something you could do at home.

We do offer a Curt Class I hitch for your 2015 Mazda Miata MX-5 as long as it does not have the appearance package. It also fits the Miata with the power retractable hardtop. Curt hitch # C11028 features a 1-1/4-inch receiver opening and installs using included hardware. A bit of drilling and fascia trimming is required. I have linked an install video as well as a helpful article to illustrate the installation process. If you plan to use the hitch for a bike rack you can use one of the...

However, if your MX5 Miata has the appearance package (ground effects package) the hitch will not fit. If you will be using the hitch as an attachment point for a bike rack or cargo carrier, the warranty stipulations of the Curt C11028 hitch state that a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 must be used. We have one trailer hitch for the 2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata. It is Curt hitch # C11028. It will not fit models that have the factory Appearance Package. It does work with models that have the power retractable hardtop. This is a Class I Curt trailer hitch which means a few things. You have to make sure the bike rack is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch. • Estimated Time for a Professional to Install a Trailer Hitch and Wiring on a 2006 Mazda Miata
Curt suggests that the professional install time for hitch # C11028 on a 2006 Mazda Miata is 90 minutes. The wiring harness, # 56082, should install in half that time at most since it just plugs in line with the vehicle tail light wiring and does not require a power wire from the battery. So beginning to end I would estimate 2 to 3 hours tops. This is based on a professional installation by someone who has installed hitches and wiring harnesses before.

On certain Curt trailer hitches, Curt requires a stabilization strap for their warranty on non-trailer loads. The strap in question is # 18050. Yes, I called my contact at Curt Manufacturing and they informed that the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11028 is not compatible with the appearance package on your 2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata because of the larger rear valence.
