2024 Ford Ranger Battery Management System and Auto Start Stop Issues After Curt Trailer Wiring

I recently purchased Curt equipment for my 2024 Ford Ranger. C57672 Trailer Connector and C55152 Wiring Kit. Since it was installed, the Auto On/Off does not operate normally. The display message indicates the Engine is on due to vehicle charging. No other changes have been made. I removed the wire connection to the battery and the issues still persists. Has this been reported previously and/or is there anything that can be done to correct? Any advice or suggestions is appreciated. Thank you

Hi William, great question.
It does not sound like the Curt wiring itself damaged anything, and while I have not seen widespread reports specifically tied to the Curt # C57672 and # C55152 causing permanent issues on the 2024 Ranger, we absolutely have seen newer Ford vehicles behave this way when the battery monitoring sensor or battery connections are disturbed during accessory installations. The Ranger uses a very sensitive battery management system tied into the auto start and stop feature, so if the sensor at the negative battery terminal gets loosened, partially disconnected, or starts reading incorrectly, the truck can display messages like “Engine On Due to Vehicle Charging” and disable normal auto start and stop operation.
Since the issue continued even after you removed the black power wire from the battery, that points more toward the truck still seeing an abnormal battery monitoring condition rather than the trailer wiring actively drawing power. Ford’s charging strategy is extremely sensitive, and even a small interruption at the sensor can make the truck think the battery is still charging.
I would start by closely inspecting the negative battery terminal area and making sure the battery monitoring sensor connector is fully seated and all battery connections are tight and clean. Sometimes disconnecting the sensor for a few minutes and reconnecting everything securely will allow the system to recalibrate as well. I also want to mention that for the 2024 Ranger, Curt now recommends the plug and play harness part # C96GJ instead of the hardwired # C57672 and # C55152 combination because it integrates more cleanly with the Ranger’s factory plug. I still don't know if that would solve this issue though. I recommend to check the sensor first and see if that fixes it.
I completely understand why this would be concerning because these newer trucks can make it feel like one small electrical change upset the whole system. What do you usually tow with your Ranger, a camper, boat, or utility trailer?

HI Heather, It is a utility trailer with a 4 flat connection. I have not needed a 7 way connection so far but I wanted to have it just in case. Thank you again for your help!

Hi Heather, THANK YOU! Your advice was right on track. After reading your response, I did some research and saw instructions to reset the Battery Monitor Sensor. After doing the reset (Thursday morning), I was out doing errands. After a several short trips, Auto On/Off began working. The next day (Friday) Auto On/Off was not working until later in the day after making several short drives. This morning (Saturday), Auto On/Off began working normally after the initial engine warm period of 8 to 10 minutes. Don't know if it takes a couple of days for the sensor to fully recalibrate but it seems OK now. If the issue resurfaces, I'll probably take it to the dealer for them to check it out. Thank you for the information about the plug and play harness. That sounds much better than what I'm using but I probably won't change unless problems develop since everything is working. Thank you again for your help!
