Does Plastic Underbody Panel Have To Be Reinstalled After Putting Trailer Hitch On Toyota Highlander

Question:

Do I have to put the plastic back up under the Highlander or can I go without it?

Hey Kyle, thanks for reaching out. You don’t have to put that plastic underbody panel back on, the vehicle will be just fine without it. A lot of people leave it off after installing a hitch and never have an issue.

That said, if you’re going for a cleaner, more factory look, trimming it and reinstalling is the way to go. It helps tidy up the underside and can give you a better finished appearance around the hitch. It really just comes down to how you want it to look, functionally you’re good either way.

What will you be using the hitch for?

Hi Kyle. I installed that model hitch on my 2022 Highlander Hybrid LE a couple of years ago and it went really smoothly. I took the time to trim the plastic to fit, mainly for the more finished look. Aesthetically the hitch is non-intrusive, and functionally it's pretty bombproof. The video detailing connecting the wiring harness was essential for me. Very pleased with the whole process. Good Luck!

@Day same for me. An easy install and the trimming was not difficult. If you use it with a bike rack you may need to adjust your rear cross traffic alert settings if you ever back up with the rack in use.

Like everyone has mentioned, you don’t have to replace the plastic cover if you don’t want to, has no effect on form or function just keeps it looking factory if you take the time to put it back on.
