How to Use a Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller on a Vehicle w/a 4-Way Connector

Updated 05/07/2026 | Published 05/05/2026

Question:

I have a 4 way connection on my vehicle and camper has a 7 way. I have bought an adapter for the 4 way to 7 way and was told that it just wouldn’t charge the battery. Could I still use the wireless Bluetooth curt brake controller

Hey Heidi. To use a Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller item # C51180 on a tow vehicle with only a 4-way connector, you'll need the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation item # ETBC7L.

The Curt Echo item # C51180 requires a 7-way connector with a 12v power supply. The item # ETBC7L is going to plug directly into your 4-way and then you'll just need to run the included wiring directly to your tow vehicle's battery and ground the harness near where you attach it. You do not have to run any wires into your cab and wiring the accessory circuit is optional but it will charge your camper's battery.

You can not use your regular 4-way to 7-way adapter with a brake controller because they do not supply the necessary power.

What kind of camper do you have and do you use the battery on it?

I have a 2021 Braxton Bushwacker Plus 17fd and it does have a battery. I was told with the 4way to 7way adapter that it would run the lights but would not charge the battery.

@Heidi That is correct. The 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation item # ETBC7L is what you'll need to power the Curt Echo item # C51180 and charge your trailer's battery.
