Should Charge Light of Bright Way Breakaway Charge System Stay On When Charged
Updated 05/06/2026 | Published 04/26/2026 >
Question:
I had a Brightway kit 2327 with charging light on continuously and 7 way power disconnected from my truck. My horse trailer has 2 12V Marine batteries, both fully charged. I replaced the kit with 2783 and still have the same situation. Please tell me what else could be the problem.

Hey Annette, is the issue that the battery is fully charged yet the light is indicating that it is still charging? That's actually a pretty common thing and does no mean there's an actual issue if so.

I was going to say something is wrong if the charge light is on while the trailer is disconnected from the truck, but when I thought about it, I'll bet someone wired the 12v pin at the trailer plug directly back to your marine batteries to keep them charged while on the road. When you disconnect the plug from the truck, the wire is still "hot" because it's hooked to your marine batteries so the small breakaway battery is getting charged from your marine batteries. It's probably not a big draw and not a big deal, just a quirk of the system.

The two Batteries are back charging breakaway . If the plug from trailer to truck is unhooked . You need to take wire from the two batteries off and see if light turns off.

When I first hook my trailer up to my Defender, the yellow charging light of my system will come on indicating that the system is charging. Once it’s hooked up long enough or after you drive awhile, the light will change to the green lamp indicating that the system is fully charged. One thing to note, while it’s charging, the system is still fully functional. And, as with all batteries, newer ones will charge faster, keep their charge longer, and older ones will require more time to charge.
