Is There A 5th Wheel Rated Bike Rack That Can Carry Two E-Bikes And Two Kids Bikes?

Question:

Good morning, I have a 2022 keystone avalanche 352bh fifth wheel with a 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 pulling. What would be the best way to haul 4 bikes? 2 potential e-bikes and 2 kids bikes. There is a hitch on back of camper with a 300lb max tongue weight. Thank you for any information.

Hey Tylor, thanks for reaching out. That is a tall order. We do have 4-bike racks that can handle e-bikes, but none of them are rated for use on a 5th wheel. It is possible to carry two e-bikes on the back of a 5th wheel, but you wouldn't be able to carry the two kids bikes at the same time.

For example, a great 5th wheel rated rack is the Hollywood Racks RV Rider # HLY64FR. This can hold two e-bikes weighing up to 80 lbs apiece. Definitely one of our best options for safely and securely carrying e-bikes on an RV. Plus, it is a frame mount rack so fenders, cargo racks and step thru frames are not a problem.

If I were you I would lean towards this rack, then store the kids bikes in a cargo compartment or inside the camper itself. There really just isn't a safe way to carry all 4 of those bikes at the same time on a 5th wheel.

What kind of e-bikes are you looking at? Any cool rides planned?

Not sure yet on the e-bike ( still working on that) what about any roof racks? If there a roof bike rack for the truck that can handle the 2 e-bikes and 2 kids bikes? Thank you for your response!

@TylorW That's could potentially work. Carrying 4 bikes with two of them being e-bikes on a roof rack is tricky because of weight limitations but you could do the 2-bike rack on the back of the 5th wheel then put the other two kids bikes on the roof. Is your Silverado a crew cab, double cab or regular cab?

Tylor. I purchased the 2 bike rack from these guys last year. I also have a keystone with a 300lbs max carrying hitch. Here is some stuff to consider when buying a bike rack. You have to take in account for the weight of the rack first and foremost. Second my e- bikes are off road mountain bikes which weigh about 80# per bike. So I am almost at safe limit. I take my batteries out when traveling with them back, And I spent really good money on a waterproof cover for them. Last but not least. I had to remove the spare tire from the back and I mounted it under the trailer. If you don’t do that than one of the handles will always be banging on the back. To solve that issue. I bought a 12” hitch extension. Works much better. I hope this helps. Happy camping!

This rack is perfect for heavy ebikes, but only two. I'd add a rack to the roof or front truck bumper for the kids bikes, or store in the bed. Side note: We've been to Alaska abd Nova Scotia with our 35' 5th Wheel and this rack on the back. Had to add a custom extension, and a hitch clamp to stabilize. I also use straps to be 100% solid on bad roads, but it works well. Easy loading and a waterproof cover works well on it. IMO, it's the best choice and value for ebikes.

I have hauled bikes on the back of my Class C and on the vehicle, I am towing. This rack holds bikes very stable. It is quite heavy and not as easy to set it up because you have to bolt and unbolt. I guess that is why it holds the bike so securely. I bought an ebike but had to send it back. I Am considering buying another one this year. In the mean time, I hall my carbon fiber bikes that weigh 18 and 22 lbs. This rack is not rated to haul carbon fiber frame bikes, but I attach it to the seat post not the frame. I definitely recommend this rack for RVing.

@JohnR Thanks for the feedback, John. Sounds like you’ve got a good handle on it, they’re definitely a little more work to set up, but like you said, that’s what gives you that solid, no-wobble hold going down the road. Good call on using the seat post for the carbon bikes too, that’s the way to do it with those lighter frames. Appreciate you sharing your experience, especially with RV use, that helps a ton for others looking at the same setup.

@JesseM I forgot one thing. Etrailer has great information, but I recommend going to the manufacture's website. if I recall correctly, the weight drops to 60 lbs. If you use a hitch extension.

@John Yes our rule of thumb is when you use a hitch extension, your hitches tongue weight capacity is cut in half. With your bikes being so light that shouldn't be an issue though.

Hi Tyler, I purchased the Hollywood rack to carry 2E bikes I purchased it because of previous ratings but also because it is one of the few racks that are actually approved to put on a travel trailer namely a fifth wheel. This rack is extremely well built, and I have absolutely no complaints. It performed extremely well. I would not hesitate to purchase one in a minute.. The only thing that would make this rack better is if there was some sort of ramp because it is difficult to lift E bikes as you may know.

@PurchasedR Hey thanks for sharing! Glad to hear you are liking your Hollywood rack. You are right a ramp would be nice but on these racks with wheel hoops there just isn't a great attachment point for a ramp.
