Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 With Blue Ox Setup and Demco Air Force One

Updated 03/19/2026 | Published 03/16/2026

Question:

Im getting ready to flat tow my 2023 4wd Chevy Silverado 1500 with 3.0 diesel. It has the high/low transfer case. I have the Air Force one on our 2021 Newmar Dutch Star. I also have all of the Blue Ox tow system. I know I need a Demco SM99209 for the truck. What do I need for the battery disconnect and lighting system? Any thing else I might need?

Hey Joe! Do you have a base plate already or just the Blue Ox tow bar? If you need a base plate kit you can use the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BLU24TR. In addition to the Second Vehicle Kit for Demco Air Force One # SM99209 you will need the following:

-Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-15267

-Roadmaster Battery Disconnect for Towed Vehicle w/ Flat Tow Brake System - Diesel # RM93MR

-Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-156-25

These three parts will complete your wiring. Outside of that, you're all set aside from the potential need for a high-low adapter like the # e52ZV to keep your setup level.

The bracket height on the Blue Ox base plate is 21" so you can subtract the measurement from the ground to the center of your receiver on the motorhome to see if you're level. You want to be as level as possible, but +/- 3" from center is considered the safe zone. See the attached photo.

Where are you headed once you get the Silverado set up for towing?

Hey Joe, I have a Newell coach which comes factory equipped with the air braking system for trailers and towed vehicles, so the Demco second vehicle kit worked well for me. I did need to buy the coiled air jumper hose separately, as the kit assumes you already have one. The install was pretty straightforward with the detailed instructions included. Pulling a Ram truck, I fortunately didn’t need to mess around with a battery disconnect, but during the install I did run a hot wire for a charger/maintainer which is unused but available. If your truck doesn’t have LED taillights, there’s a “second bulb” light kit, which allows you to drill a hole in your light housing and install a second bulb (assuming there’s room). This way, there’s no need to cut into the vehicle wiring and mess around with diodes. Works great, cheaper too. I had no experience with dinghy towing, other than seeing other vehicles being pulled behind RVs when I passed them on the highway. etrailer had everything I needed, plus a wealth of informative videos and reviews that made my installation easy, actually pleasurable. I’ve used etrailer for years and will continue to do so. Happy travels! Dave S
