How To Mount 7-way Connector On 2021 Subaru Ascent with Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver

Updated 03/30/2026 | Published 03/15/2026

Question:

I have installed a Curt class III hitch on a 2021 Subaru Ascent which mounts inside of the plastic bumper cover. I would like to install a seven pin connector to allow a break controller, but cannot find enough room inside the access panel or a location on the hitch to mount the connector bracket. Is there a location to mount a seven pin bracket on the Ascent? Also, what would be the best option for the break controller that would be easy to install and mount? Thank you David

Hey David,

When I've installed these before on Subaru's I use the no drill mounting bracket # C57202 and the 7-way mounting bracket # TS64RR attached to the driver side of the hitch crosstube. You'll have to bend the bracket to get the clearance for the 7-way to fit, its a little frustrating of a trial and error but it will fit.

For a brake controller I really like the Tow-Pro Liberty from Redarc # RED52VR. Install is pretty straight forward, you just drill a hole in either the dash/console making sure you have 2" or so clearance behind where ever you drill for the controller to fit, and that you're not going to hit anything behind the dash, then just wire it up. The button is the only visible portion of the controller visible and it's about the size of a nickel, turns out looking very OEM once installed.

Do you already have the 7-way connector? If not you'll need to get the # ETBC7 and have a 4-way connector installed.

Samuel, Thank you for your answer and suggestions. The no drill mounting bracket will solve the issues with limited space behind the bumper cover. Thanks David F.
