Question:

How does one let the car know there is a trailer behind you so the car does not misidentify it with its sensors?

Hello Derek, thanks for reaching out. On a Model Y, the car only knows there’s a trailer back there when Trailer Mode is enabled, and that only shows up if it detects a powered connection through the factory 7-way harness.

With an aftermarket hitch and no Tesla tow module, the car has no way of knowing there’s a trailer back there. On the Model Y, Trailer Mode only appears when the factory wiring module detects a load on the 7-pin. Without that module, you can’t manually force true Trailer Mode on.

What you can do is temporarily silence the alerts. On the screen go to Controls, then Safety, and turn off Park Assist Chimes. That stops the constant beeping from the rear sensors. If the visual proximity warnings are bothering you, they’ll still show on screen, but they won’t chime.

If you want full Trailer Mode behavior, including proper stability programming and sensor logic, the only real solution is adding the Tesla OEM tow wiring module so the vehicle can detect the trailer correctly.

What kind of trailer are you wanting to haul? Any cool trips planned?
