Looking For Hand Rail Solution For 2020 Grand Design Imagine 2970RL With MORryde Step

Updated 03/16/2026 | Published 03/09/2026

Question:

I believe I have the 3 step MORryde Step Above 1st Generation. I am looking at adding the handrail, and I see from other questions that I need at least 33inch of clearance. My question is, where do I measure that distance? I have a 2020 Grand Design Imagine 2970RL, and the bathroom wall is directly in front of the entry door. With the steps down, I have in excess of 33 inches from wall to wall. But with the steps up, I have less than 33 inches between the steps and the bathroom wall. I just need to know where the measurement should be taken. Thank you, Bob Anthony

Hey Bob, thanks for reaching out, and good question. For the # MR93RR hand rail, the 33" of clearance needs to be measured with the step folded up. Basically, you measure from the edge of the step where the rail attached straight back. There needs to be at least 33" for the step and rail to fold up all the way. Based on what you're describing, the rail would not work with your setup since it sounds like you have less than 33" to the bathroom wall.

If you need to add a handrail, a better option would be the MORryde Safe-T-Rail Telescoping RV Hand Rail # MR54BR. This mounts outside the camper next to the door then it folds up flat against the trailer when not in use. A solid handrails solution for those setups that have limited clearance inside the door. It will work on virtually any camper with a flat fiberglass wall.

Do you have a few inches of space on the side of the door where you could mount the rail?

Yes, I believe I have enough room. That was also an option I was looking at, but wanted to verify the measurement on the first option. Thank you.

the telescoping handrail is a perfect fit for my 2017 Northpoint 5th wheel. my wife is handicapp and she now gets up and down the stairs leaning on it as well. Easy to install.I only had 3.5" space and it did 't need half to screw it on the left side of the door Easy for wife to put slide it up or extend. sturdy enough for me and I am 6'5 270 lbs.

My vote is for the telescoping rail for 2 reasons, 1) its the best system by far from the fasten on safety rail permanently fastened to stairs ( I have had both!) it stores out of the way when not in use. 2) I got rid of the fold out hand grab that come on 90% of travel trailers that people can lock u in your own trailer at night if they want to be ornery! it also combines both grabs into one! I upgraded myself with little trouble! hope this helps!
