Best Weight Distribution System for Trailer with Tongue Weight of 750 lb

Published 03/03/2026

Question:

Hi, Im looking at weight distribution hitches with sway control, e.g. Equalizer, Blue Ox, Curt, etc. My unloaded factory hitch weight is 500 lbs.. The trailer is just over 5200 lbs with a GVWR of about 7500 lb. What kind of weight/spring bar rating should I be looking at? 8000/800, 10000/1000lb, or something else. Thanks for your help.

Hey Greg, the best way to pick out a weight distribution system is going to be based on the loaded tongue weight of your trailer and then going with a system that has a TW range that encompasses the tongue weight of the trailer. If you go too low the system won't be effective and if you go too high the ride quality will be really harsh. So since your tongue weight is probably going to be between 600 and 750 lbs on the lighter end a system like the part # EQ37100ET would be your best option as it has a range of 600 to 1,000 lbs and many consider it to be the best all around system available. What kind of trailer do you have?

Thanks for the helpful advice. I was leaning toward your suggested weight range for my Surveyor Legend 202RBLE. I used an Equalizer for a previous trailer back in 2007 to 2012 so I know and trust the product.
