Brake Controller for 2022 Chevrolet Traverse With Factory Tow Package
Updated 04/04/2026 | Published 02/22/2026 >
Question:
I have a 2022 Chevy traverse with the trailer in package. The trailering package includes a seven pin connector, but no brake controller. What the heck was GM thinking? From my investigation there is a four wire harness mounted behind a plastic panel down near the driver’s left foot. What model brake controller do you recommend? Is that for wire harness all I need or do I need to punch through the firewall and bring 12V in?

Hi Joseph! I understand your frustration, leaving out the brake controller even with the tow package is pretty common. That factory wiring harness will already be hooked up and ready for a brake controller so you won't have to run any additional wiring. However, there are no custom fit wiring harnesses for that connector so you will need to cut it off and splice in.
For a brake controller I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED52VR. The Liberty is simple, incredibly reliable, and won't take up space in your Traverse. The main unit installs out of sight and the knob installs in the dash for an OEM look. The knob controls the braking power and also acts as the manual override.
What trailer are you towing first and where are you headed?

I’m thinking of getting a liberty 14 foot trailer that has a 5000 pound axle and comes with brakes to haul a four seater side-by-side that weigh about 2000 pounds plus gear. The trailer itself weighs 1350 pounds
