Yakima BackSwing Demonstration Swing Away Hitch Extender

The Yakima BackSwing converts your existing 2" bike rack into a swing-away rack, giving you complete access to your hatch or tailgate area. This swing-away hitch extender is also compatible with other 2" hitch accessories, like cargo carriers and grills. The BackSwing installs in your 2" hitch with the included anti-rattle hitch pin, and a SKS hitch lock deters theft of the extender.

Swing-Away Design for Full Access to Rear Cargo Area

Yakima BackSwing Ford F-150 with 4 Bike Rack Demonstration

The BackSwing features a hinged arm that lets you swing the rack, or accessory, 90 degrees away from the rear of your vehicle. This provides maximum access to your vehicle's rear cargo area and eliminates the need to unload or remove the accessory when you're unloading cargo or letting your dog hop in or out of the back.

Yakima BackSwing Works with Jeep with Spare Tire Full Access

Because the BackSwing also works as a hitch extender, it's perfect for vehicles with a rear-mounted spare tire.

Yakima BackSwing Lever Safety Latch Demonstration Swinging Open

To open the hinged arm, simply disengage the release lever, pull the spring pin, and swing the rack away from the rear of your vehicle. The BackSwing will easily rotate outward to provide an additional separation from the rear of the vehicle. The arm will lock into place once it's fully extended at 90 degrees, so your hands are free to open your hatch and remove cargo.

Yakima BackSwing Lever Safety Latch Demonstration Swinging Close

To close the BackSwing, just pull the release lever at the end of the adapter and swing the extended arm back into position. Once you hear the spring pin lock into place, put the safety latch back into position, and you're ready to go.

Compatible with Most 2" Hitch Accessories

Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch with Bike Rack

This versatile hitch extender will work with most bike racks or hitch accessories with a 2" shank. It works with both platform and hanging bike racks, and it can support up to 4 bikes on either syle of rack. The BackSwing has a weight capacity of 250 lbs, not including the weight of the bike rack or bikes, so keep in mind the weight of your rack when deciding how many bikes can be safely loaded for your application.

Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender with Cargo Carrier

The BackSwing also works with hitch-mounted cargo carriers to provide expanded storage without limiting access to your vehicle's hatch or tailgate area. You can even pair it with a hitch-mounted grill, allowing you to pivot the grill out away from the vehicle, while retaining full access to coolers and supplies while grilling.

Before mounting your accessory, be sure it is a compatible hitch accessory. The BackSwing is only compatible with accessories that have a dedicated 2" shank, and it shouldn't be used with any type of adapter. If you aren't sure if your acessory is compatible with a hitch extender check with the accessory's manufacturer. Once confirmed, slide your accessory's shank into the BackSwing, install the accessory's hitch pin, and then follow any specific directions the accessory has for installation.

Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender Stablizer Bolt Securing Accessory

Once you have secured the shank of the accessory into the BackSwing's receiver, tighten down the stabilizer bolt and nut on top of the receiver tube until snug. This will hold the accessory in place and ensure a tight connection that reduces movement and noise while on the move.

Easy installation with Threaded Hitch Pin

The BackSwing installs quickly and easily with a threaded, anti-rattle hitch pin. Simply slide the shank into your 2" hitch receiver, insert the threaded hitch pin, and tighten it down with a wrench. This will also reduce noise and movement while the extender is installed. The unit comes with a hitch lock that uses a Yakima Same Key System (SKS) lock core to secure the extender to your vehicle. SKS cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima products keyed alike.

Lastly, the BackSwing is only compatible with 2" receivers and shouldn't ever be used with a hitch adapter, reducer, or extender.

Video Transcript for Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima Backswing Swing Away Hitch Extender for bike racks, part number Y02483. The Yakima Backswing is going to help solve the problem of limited access to your rear hatch area. For instances such as this, with the Yakima FourTimer, while it can't tilt away with all four bikes attached, we still can open our rear hatch here on our Jeep, all the way. Even when the main mast is folded flat, we still don't have full hatch access. The backswing is also going to help out in situations such as this where the bike rack that you may have doesn't even tilt away, so you have to remove the bike rack completely just to get rear hatch access. The Yakima Backswing acts as a hitch extender for your existing bike rack to either allow access to your rear hatch or to make access to your rear hatch a lot easier. It does this by extending to 90 degrees, so you can get to where you need.

It starts up at the front here with this handle. You pull up to release it, and then we'll pull out this pin here, and then we'll pull our bike rack out and away. As you can see, with our hatch all the way open, the tire not even making contact with our bike rack here. To fold it back in its original position, it's very easy, you come to the latch here, lift up, and pull it back towards you. Swing it back around until that latches back in place.

With the latch here, you want to make sure that when it comes down, it goes in this area here. A lot of the times it can get caught here and you do not want that to happen. Then, you just push down and it's secure back in place. This will also fit platform style, like you see here. This will fit almost all Yakima bike racks with the two inch hitches, and most other bike racks with two inch hitches, as well. Although, if it's a conversion where it can go from one and a quarter inch to 2 inch, that will not work on this system.

But it can also be used with hitch cargo carriers and hitch mounted grills. The carrying capacity for the backswing is going to be up to four bikes for your bike racks or 250 pounds for other applications, such as your cargo carriers or your gas grills. There's a specific note I like to give for cargo carriers. The weight capacity for the backswing is going to be 250 pounds, but most cargo carriers go above that. For example, this one could go up to 600 pounds, so just be careful you're not overloading the weight on the cargo carrier once that's installed. This is also very easy to install.

Without the actually attachment on it, it simply slides into the two inch hitch. It's tightened down by anti-rattle bold, which will take out that shake and play in the shank and make for a smooth ride. It also has a lock on the other end of it with an SKS lock horn installed to help secure it to your vehicle and deter theft. On the end of the lock, it also has a dust cover to it to keep the road dirt and grim out of it while you travel. All accessories, such as, the cargo carriers, bike racks, or gas grills are sold separately, however, once you install them, it does come with this set screw here to add a little bit of stability once it's installed, as well as a lock nut to keep everything nice and in place.Comparing this with other products, one that come up is going to be the Kuat Pivot Hitch Extender, part number PV20B. These are very much alike. They have almost the exact qualities to them. One difference between these two is going to be the set screw. They Pivot doesn't come with one, while the Yakima Backswing does, and that provides that extra little bit of stability while you're traveling. Another difference is how they swing out. While it still has the same lever style action here, it does have this easy release pin, as opposed to the pin and clip that you have to remove with the Pivot. This you just pull out and it's ready to go. Also, once it finally does swing out, it has this catch at the end where, with the Pivot, you'd have to reinsert the pin here to keep it in place. One final difference between the two is going to be the weights of the carriers themselves. With this being 36 pounds, and with the Pivot being 46 pounds.Next, I'd like to give you some quick dimensions here. The measurements for this application are going to be 30 inches long by 8 inches tall. Also, from the center of the hitch pin hole to our upright point here, that's going to be 8.5 inches. From the center of our hitch pin hole to the edge is going to be 16 3/4 inches to this edge. Also, from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of our hitch pin hole up here is going to be 14 inches. One final note, this is designed to work well cars, vans, SUVs, and trucks. This is not designed to work with motor homes, RVs, or towable campers, or 5th wheel campers. Now, we can install the backswing itself, but it's a very easy install. You simply slide it into the hitch and line up the pin holes. I'll thread in our anti-rattle bolt. Then, we'll tighten it down with a one inch ratchet or wrench, depending on what you've got. Get it nice and tight, so there's on shake or play in the shank. Then, on the other side, we'll install our lock. We'll lock it in place. Put our dust cap over it. With that installed, now we can install our bike rack. Lining up the pin holes again, and installing it accordingly. We can tighten down our stabilizer bolt. This is going assist with keeping everything in place. This is 3/4 inch bit that we're using or socket, I should say, that we're using. Get that nice and tight, and then we'll tighten down our lock nut as well, so that won't come loose. All right. Now, we're ready load up our bikes, and then we'll take it out on our test course and show you how stable it is.Here it is on our test course. We'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action, which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Next, we're at the alternating speed bumps, which we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb, or pothole, or driving over uneven pavement. And there you have it for the Yakima Backswing Swing Away Hitch Extender for bike racks, part number Y02483.

Amazing service and quick turn around. Thankfully they ship to APO AE over seas! I highly recommend this website and their services! 523740

Purchased this to use with the Yakima HoldUp EVO bike rack. It's very convenient to be able to swing the bikes out of the way instead of having to remove them to open the tailgate, especially when it may not be necessary (or practical) at the time to take the bikes off your rack. It requires tools and doesn't install as quickly as the HoldUp EVO, so I don't use it in quick trips around town, but you can leave it installed and take the bike rack on an off if necessary. Solid steel construction and durable. 665273

One of the best accessories I’ve bought for my Jeep!! It makes traveling with a hitch basket SO easy! Prior to getting this, I would have to get on the ground to unlock the basket hitch, have my wife help me pull it off (with or without stuff on it), and then finally have access to the trunk. We travel with our dogs in a cage system in the back buckled in so this process made bathroom stops almost a 45min ordeal. With the Backswing I can get into the trunk area in 15seconds, what used to take 5mins or more. AMAZING!!! 641141

High quality product. Fits my stock JK Wrangler hitch. Allows clearance for my slightly oversize tire and swings out far enough for access to the back of the Jeep. Easy install with no hiccups. I use it for my fat tire E-bike with no problems. I do not keep my bike rack installed all the time due to the length of the swing arm and bike rack combined adding extra length to my daily driver Jeep. Check out the pics. Installation of the bike rack is very easy to do. I ride my bike daily and at times have need to get picked up due to mechanical problems. Since I don't have the bike rack on the Jeep my wife has to install the bike rack in order to come get me. I have a rolling cart jack with the bike rack so my wife can load up the rack in just a few minutes to get me and the bike. The swing arm and bike rack tends to place the bike a distance from the back of the Jeep but it also allows easy access for the install and prevents the pedals and other bike parts from contact with the Jeep. Very pleased with this unit. My bike rack is a 2 bike rack but I have removed one side. 683367

Another excellent Yakima product. Now I can get in and out of my truck camper without climbing over bikes. Great service from eTrailer 637856

Nice unit. Installed on my 2019 Subaru Ascent. The way the factory hitch is on this vehicle (very high) any accessory like a bike rack or tray is going to be hit by the lift gate. This takes care of that. Assembled easy except for one snap ring that needed some extra efforts to install. Attached a tray carrier and seems to be a nice set up . I may end up bolting tray hitch pin to allow it to be tightened up assure it doesn’t wiggle too much. If your tray or bike rack has a locking pin set up that would be the best. It does add a bit more than a foot of length to the whole set up. In my case I would have needed to install an extension anyway so this is the best option. 729639

Easy to install. Product does what it is made to do. Very satisfied. 729201

- Y02483

I installed this unit on my Sprinter van because my bike racks did not have enough clearance for the rear doors to open. The BackSwing was as advertised. It provided plenty of clearance for both doors to open without interference. I've purchase a few items from etrailer and have not been disappointed. 729190

- Y02483

Product functionally works great! The only flaw is that the plastic cover around the main hinge sits in front of the exhaust pipe and has melted a bit. My car makes a low hum when getting up to higher speeds and I think it's due to air getting under the melted plastic and causing a vibration but I can't test this theory. 727452

- Y02483

Used this in conjunction with a 2'x4' cargo carrier on the back of a jeep Wrangler. Works quite well even with the spare tire still mounted. The spare tire does keep the door from opening past about 80 - 85 degrees but it is more than enough room to open everything. The unit comes with a bolt and lock rather than a hitch pin and I drilled that out to accept a standard pin as I take this off and on very frequently and need the convenience of a standard pin and snap ring. Happy with the unit and fit. 706705

- Y02483

works great, fits perfect to our etrailer subaru hitch i had installed in the spring and our 15 year yakima bike rack mounted right on 679308

This is awesome. I am now able to use the back door on my Jeep and still keep my bike on the rack. This is my second item purchased from e-trailer. You need to let the people of Rad electric bike know about your great products. I am posting some pictures on the Facebook page for the other owners. Thanks again 605134

  • Recommended Swing Away for Swagman 2+2 Quad Bike Rack on 4Runner with Aftermarket Spare Tire Rack
  • The Swagman Quad 2+2 2-Bike and 4-Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches # S64692 has a measurement of 17-1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest wheel tray. The shank raises at the 10 inch point. To get your swing away, I recommend the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 which is 14-1/2 inches from pin to pin and will be away from the spare tire with restricted clearance versus on top. This means you will have 21 inches from the center of the pin to the upright rise in...

  • Will the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 Fit on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with a Spare tire
  • It really depends on the location of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch. A trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite # 76104, which is a confirmed fit for your 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, sticks out significantly farther than OEM trailer hitches do so it would be less likely of an issue. • Will the Thule Apex Bike Rack Work With The Yakima BackSwing
  • We have not physically tested the Thule Apex Bike Rack with the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender part # Y02483 so I cannot confirm an exact fit but I do not see any apparent issue in doing so. However, the Yakima BackSwing will reduce your trailer hitch's weight capacity by 50% so you will need to keep this in mind while loading your bikes. If the weight of your bikes and bike rack exceeds 50% of the trailer hitch's tongue weight capacity then you may be interested in the...

Over time, the heat from the exhaust may cause some paint or finish issues on the extender. The best solution for this would be to simply add some exhaust...

  • Dimensions of Yakima BackSwing Swing-Away Hitch Extender
  • I went out to our warehouse to measure the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender # Y02483 and found it was approximately 4-3/4" from the top of the extension to the top of the assembly. Please keep in mind the BackSwing was not fully assembled when I measured so there may be a slight difference in this dimension when it is fully assembled.

  • Recommended Swinging Cargo Carrier for a 2017 Ford Transit
  • I am glad that you are open to a trailer hitch receiver at the back of your 2017 Ford Transit T150 because unfortunately there aren't any front mount trailer hitch receivers for your vehicle. For a rear mount hitch receiver I recommend going with the etrailer.com # E98842 as it has the highest weight ratings when it comes to trailer hitches for your vehicle that don't require drilling, and the matte black finish will do a better job at hiding scratches than the glossy finish will that other...
