Specs:
The Yakima BackSwing converts your existing 2" bike rack into a swing-away rack, giving you complete access to your hatch or tailgate area. This swing-away hitch extender is also compatible with other 2" hitch accessories, like cargo carriers and grills. The BackSwing installs in your 2" hitch with the included anti-rattle hitch pin, and a SKS hitch lock deters theft of the extender.
The BackSwing features a hinged arm that lets you swing the rack, or accessory, 90 degrees away from the rear of your vehicle. This provides maximum access to your vehicle's rear cargo area and eliminates the need to unload or remove the accessory when you're unloading cargo or letting your dog hop in or out of the back.
Because the BackSwing also works as a hitch extender, it's perfect for vehicles with a rear-mounted spare tire.
To open the hinged arm, simply disengage the release lever, pull the spring pin, and swing the rack away from the rear of your vehicle. The BackSwing will easily rotate outward to provide an additional separation from the rear of the vehicle. The arm will lock into place once it's fully extended at 90 degrees, so your hands are free to open your hatch and remove cargo.
To close the BackSwing, just pull the release lever at the end of the adapter and swing the extended arm back into position. Once you hear the spring pin lock into place, put the safety latch back into position, and you're ready to go.
This versatile hitch extender will work with most bike racks or hitch accessories with a 2" shank. It works with both platform and hanging bike racks, and it can support up to 4 bikes on either syle of rack. The BackSwing has a weight capacity of 250 lbs, not including the weight of the bike rack or bikes, so keep in mind the weight of your rack when deciding how many bikes can be safely loaded for your application.
The BackSwing also works with hitch-mounted cargo carriers to provide expanded storage without limiting access to your vehicle's hatch or tailgate area. You can even pair it with a hitch-mounted grill, allowing you to pivot the grill out away from the vehicle, while retaining full access to coolers and supplies while grilling.
Before mounting your accessory, be sure it is a compatible hitch accessory. The BackSwing is only compatible with accessories that have a dedicated 2" shank, and it shouldn't be used with any type of adapter. If you aren't sure if your acessory is compatible with a hitch extender check with the accessory's manufacturer. Once confirmed, slide your accessory's shank into the BackSwing, install the accessory's hitch pin, and then follow any specific directions the accessory has for installation.
Once you have secured the shank of the accessory into the BackSwing's receiver, tighten down the stabilizer bolt and nut on top of the receiver tube until snug. This will hold the accessory in place and ensure a tight connection that reduces movement and noise while on the move.
The BackSwing installs quickly and easily with a threaded, anti-rattle hitch pin. Simply slide the shank into your 2" hitch receiver, insert the threaded hitch pin, and tighten it down with a wrench. This will also reduce noise and movement while the extender is installed. The unit comes with a hitch lock that uses a Yakima Same Key System (SKS) lock core to secure the extender to your vehicle. SKS cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima products keyed alike.
Lastly, the BackSwing is only compatible with 2" receivers and shouldn't ever be used with a hitch adapter, reducer, or extender.

It is heavy, but being made of steel, it holds a heavy load. I have an old solid steel Thule rack that I modified so that I can move the bike carrier bars 180 degrees - from the traditional position carrying the bikes away from the car and carrier, or flipped over so that the bike carriers rest on my spare and carry the bikes between the rack and the car. This allows me to carry very heavy bikes, such as e-bikes compactly without extending the length of my vehicle much, and still allowing me to use the swing away feature of the Yamaha extender. Photo shows a light road bike on the hitch, but it works equally as well with heavier or multiple bikes.
We absolutely recommend this rack extension! We traveled over 4100 miles with our two E Bikes on a Kuat rack installed into this extender . It does not jiggle a bit and is so easy to use! Being able to get into the rear of our camper was essential, and I give it 5 Stars !!! totally rock solid !
The Yakima Backswing works great as it was designed for. It let me access the back door of my sprinter. I am not happy with the services because of the missing hardware and it took two months to get all the hardware.
High quality product. Fits my stock JK Wrangler hitch. Allows clearance for my slightly oversize tire and swings out far enough for access to the back of the Jeep. Easy install with no hiccups. I use it for my fat tire E-bike with no problems. I do not keep my bike rack installed all the time due to the length of the swing arm and bike rack combined adding extra length to my daily driver Jeep. Check out the pics. Installation of the bike rack is very easy to do. I ride my bike daily and at times have need to get picked up due to mechanical problems. Since I don't have the bike rack on the Jeep my wife has to install the bike rack in order to come get me. I have a rolling cart jack with the bike rack so my wife can load up the rack in just a few minutes to get me and the bike. The swing arm and bike rack tends to place the bike a distance from the back of the Jeep but it also allows easy access for the install and prevents the pedals and other bike parts from contact with the Jeep. Very pleased with this unit. My bike rack is a 2 bike rack but I have removed one side.
The product came in a timely manner and everything went together perfectly. I’m using the swing hitch to carry a Champion 2000 dual fuel inverter generator (see picture) on a TorkLift generator carrier. The generator is being used to power a portable 200 square foot Hisense A/C. I ran the truck down the highway and everything is solid.
Works great for two door Jeep Rubicon. We no longer have to remove our bike rack to gain access to the back of Jeep.
way too bulky, exspecially after you install an extention on a vehicle like a jeep where the attachment will not clear the spare tire. had to buy an initial extention to get past the spare tire then had to buy a swing arm otherwise could not open back of the vehicle. now entire unit is almost 100 lbs. no way my wife can handle it and also bulky to store
The Yakima swing arm provided just what we needed to allow the use of the Hollywood RV Rider bike rack behind our 2023 Wrangler JL.
Another excellent Yakima product. Now I can get in and out of my truck camper without climbing over bikes. Great service from eTrailer
This product seems to be really well built. I just got back from a 3 day off-roading trip. No issues what so ever and we encountered hours of extremely rough roads. This allowed me to carry gear and cleared my aftermarket tire carrier.
This is awesome. I am now able to use the back door on my Jeep and still keep my bike on the rack.
This is my second item purchased from e-trailer. You need to let the people of Rad electric bike know about your great products.
I am posting some pictures on the Facebook page for the other owners.
Thanks again

Great. We have traveled to cape cod and used our electric bikes on there trails. With out this bike rack I don’t believed I would transport the bikes anywhere. Thanks. We are super happy.
Took a few minutes to install. Feels very solid. The swing arm works perfectly with our Thule rolling bike rack! Now the bike rack swings entirely out of the way of our vans two rear swinging doors so we can open them and access what we need.
East to install. Works great with Thule 4 bike rack on Promaster Van.
Love this swing away. Makes it very easy to get into the back of my jeep.
Excellent product and I got a good price from eTrailer
Delivery was prompt and I was updated along the way
swing works well. unfortunately the swing end is right near my muffler and the plastic cover melted. My main issue with this unit is it too easy to take the bolt/nut off the swivel and remove all the "value" items attached to it.
Received the Universal Spare Tire Carrier yesterday. It is exactly what I expected and will work perfectly for my Class B motorhome. Once I receive the balance of my order (Yakima Backwing) I will be set.
Thank you etrailer.
Appears to be strong and well made.
One of the best accessories I’ve bought for my Jeep!! It makes traveling with a hitch basket SO easy! Prior to getting this, I would have to get on the ground to unlock the basket hitch, have my wife help me pull it off (with or without stuff on it), and then finally have access to the trunk. We travel with our dogs in a cage system in the back buckled in so this process made bathroom stops almost a 45min ordeal. With the Backswing I can get into the trunk area in 15seconds, what used to take 5mins or more. AMAZING!!!

Phenomenal!!!
I installed this unit on my Sprinter van because my bike racks did not have enough clearance for the rear doors to open. The BackSwing was as advertised. It provided plenty of clearance for both doors to open without interference. I've purchase a few items from etrailer and have not been disappointed.

Weve taken several road trips and the Back Swing has worked as advertised with no issues.
Best rack ever. Sturdy, solid, easy to use, no shaking. Love love love it. A plus is that it folds up when bikes are removed. You do need to still lock your bikes to it though. Additionally though, we purchased a swing hitch so this track smoothly slides out and we can easily open the hatchback of our Ford Explorer. We already recommended these 2 products from this company. They were very helpful and helped me find the best product for us. All delivered quickly, purchased over the phone.
Purchased this to use with the Yakima HoldUp EVO bike rack. It's very convenient to be able to swing the bikes out of the way instead of having to remove them to open the tailgate, especially when it may not be necessary (or practical) at the time to take the bikes off your rack.
It requires tools and doesn't install as quickly as the HoldUp EVO, so I don't use it in quick trips around town, but you can leave it installed and take the bike rack on an off if necessary.
Solid steel construction and durable.
Used this in conjunction with a 2'x4' cargo carrier on the back of a jeep Wrangler. Works quite well even with the spare tire still mounted. The spare tire does keep the door from opening past about 80 - 85 degrees but it is more than enough room to open everything. The unit comes with a bolt and lock rather than a hitch pin and I drilled that out to accept a standard pin as I take this off and on very frequently and need the convenience of a standard pin and snap ring. Happy with the unit and fit.
Nice unit. Installed on my 2019 Subaru Ascent. The way the factory hitch is on this vehicle (very high) any accessory like a bike rack or tray is going to be hit by the lift gate. This takes care of that. Assembled easy except for one snap ring that needed some extra efforts to install. Attached a tray carrier and seems to be a nice set up . I may end up bolting tray hitch pin to allow it to be tightened up assure it doesn’t wiggle too much. If your tray or bike rack has a locking pin set up that would be the best. It does add a bit more than a foot of length to the whole set up. In my case I would have needed to install an extension anyway so this is the best option.
works great, fits perfect to our etrailer subaru hitch i had installed in the spring and our 15 year yakima bike rack mounted right on

Great solution to use hitch mounted bike rack while maintains easy tail gate access
