Hitch, Wiring, and Brake Controller for 1997 K3500 Dually

Published 01/22/2026

Question:

Maam / Sir, I have a 1997 K3500 Crewcab Dually with a 6.5 and am looking at the Curt C15325 hitch. I would like to get everything all at once, so I was hoping that yall could suggest the best wiring harness going to a 7 blade and 4 pin combination hookup and a solid trailer brake setup. Thank you in advance for your help and take care. Brian ...

Hey Brian! For 7-way wiring to go with your Curt # C15325 the best option is the # 20023. This is only a 7-way so you can either use an adapter like # PK12716 or swap out the connector for one that fits a USCAR connection like the Curt Dual Connection Socket # C36GJ.

For a brake controller I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED52VR. The Liberty is simple, reliable, and won't take up space in the cab of your truck. The main unit installs behind the dash so only the control knob is visible. The knob controls the brake power and also acts as the manual override.

What will you be towing with your truck?

Hey Robin, Thank you for your reply. Is the Curt Dual Connection Socket # C36GJ an easy swap out, like unplug from the one that comes with the kit and plug it into the C36GJ, or will I need to splice the wiring? I'm good with either, just wondering. I mostly pull a 16' enclosed trailer with motorcycles and tools, but I do have a 34' double slide trailer that I take camping a couple times a year and then some smaller open trailers for random things.

@BrianT the Curt connector # C36GJ will plug right into that wiring harness in place of the other connector, no splicing required.

@RobinH, In watching the video on the brake controller, the gentleman said that I would need a universal adapter in order to connect and a 30 amp relay. Is that the case for my installation, or is what you have already suggested all that I need?

@BrianT yes, good catch. You can use the # PK54530 for a 30 amp breaker. It is typically included with our 7-way kits but since your truck can use the simpler # 20023 you need a separate part.
