Trailer Wiring for 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

Updated 01/16/2026 | Published 01/13/2026

Question:

Hello, I have a technical question in regards to a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. This vehickle is a Hybrid and I have been told that you can not cut into the wiring harness and or that the wiring harness is inacessible to use a tap style connection for the light functions to tow a trailer. I also am looking for a bolt on hitch if it is possible. Thank you for your assistance Antonio

Hey Antonio! It is probably possible to tap into that wiring, but you don't have to splice to install trailer wiring on your 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C27BR plugs into the connection points behind your tail lights, no splicing required. You will also run a 12V lead to the 12V accessory battery. See the installation video further down on this page.

If you want a 7-way you will also need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. You would only need to splice if you want to connect the reverse light circuit.

For a hitch I recommend the Blue Ox Trailer Hitch Receiver # BLU46HR. This Class III hitch sits behind that removable bumper panel just like the OEM hitch. This has a bolt-on installation and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. If you need a ball mount, check out the etrailer Adjustable 2-Ball Mount # e66PR.

What will you be towing?

Hello Robin H. So you asked me what I will be towing. I will be towing a small bost, maybe 1000 lbs. But I do plan on getting a larger one in the future. Will this receiver ( Hitch ) work with something around 4000 lbs.? Also, I watched the install videos and I just wanted to clarify that the Curt T Connector will work on the 2023 4xe as the video shows it being installed on a 2024. As it is a Hybrid Vehicle I do not want to take a chance on any electrical issues. Thank you very much for your help. Great company by the way. E-Trailer provided me with all the parts and assistance to rebuild a dual wheel boat trailer with brakes from the axles out to disc and saved me the cost of having to buy a new trailer! Antonio

@AntonioS the hitch # BLU46HR has a max gross trailer weight of 7,500 lbs so it actually exceeds the capacity of the vehicle. The Curt # C27BR will work on your 2023, it will be the same as the video for the 2024.

@AntronioS,, I have a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I purchased the wiring harness, watched the e-trailer video a few times, and routed and connected the harness exactly as shown in the video, With regards to the spare tire, mine was not mounted on the underside of my jeep. I open the hatch and remove the panel and it sits there. So, I didn't have an issue with my install with the hitch (CURT 13525 Class 3 Trailer Hitch, 2-Inch Receiver, Fits Select Jeep Grand Cherokee, L) or wiring- I purchased the the hitch that can hide behind the Bumper. It's MUCH easier to install the wiring after the Hitch is installed ( I think they even say that in the video. The only thing I did different I cut and fitted 1/4” Wire Loom Split Tubing Auto Wire Conduit Flexible Cover around the wiring from the battery to the back of my jeep - added protection so the wiring would get cut or pinched, Recommend once the wiring harness is installed "BEFORE" you put your jeep back together, make sure the turn signal and brake lights work. Would suck to have it all back together only to find out there was an issue. Total time for me and my son to remove the tail lights and bumper, pull the factory installed metal frame, install my Curt 13525 Hitch, then connect the harness and route the wiring from the battery down the right side, then to both lights, and reinstall my bumper and the rear lights was just under 5 hours on a Saturday. I did find things much easier to do with the Jeep jacked up (jack stands under the jeep, removed my tires ( both rear and the right front) you don't have to do that - but I did and it just made things much easier.

@AntronioS the # BLU46HR does not have a restriction on spare tire size so it will work.

I bought the recommended wiring and hitch reciver at etrailer and installed it without the need of cutting any cable, just connet it directly in between the original wiring and the tail light. You do have to lay one wire all the way to the battery. The hitch reciver is a bolt in no problem. They have a good video that will guide you. You need to have a reasonable idea of what you are doing as you need to dismount the tail light to install the wiring and the bumper cover and original bumper to install the reciver. You will need a torque wrench to tighthen properly.
