Can Connector On Brake Buddy Stealth Be Replaced

Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 01/09/2026

Question:

I have the Brake Buddy Stealth purchased from E Trailer a couple of years ago. It was installed in a Jeep Liberty which I recently replaced with a 2017 Grand Cherokee, I will be moving the Brake Buddy to the Grand Cherokee. Generally the Stealth is a good system but has one main weakness, that is the 7 pin flat connector unique to this system. Mine has been trouble from day one with interment connection, weak pins and corrosion. Because the breakaway is combined in the connector with any circuit interruption the toad brakes will engage. There are many others in the comments that also struggle with this weak connector design. It has caused several unsafe situations for me. The connector is not robust enough, the male pins are a split design and loose tension very easy, the female pin materials are not corrosion resistant and very thin. Im not going to struggle with this issue with the new installation and will be converting to a heavy duty 7 pin connector. I think I can rewire the breakaway feature to use a standard breakaway switch and cable. Can you suggest a good quality weatherproof 7 pin connector with a mounting bracket for the toad side and separate breakaway switch? As I said I understand the breakaway is built into the Stealth connector but studying the circuit it looks like it can be worked around to use a separate breakaway switch.

Hi Steve; I can give you the parts for this but I don't recommend it and you may screw up your brake system. I'm with you 100%, the connector on that thing sucks, but they haven't made a way to swap it out. For a standard 7-way you can use # 337TC1474P which comes with a bracket and then the Breakaway Kit # HM39340.

If you want my recommendation it would be to sell the Brake Buddy Stealth so you don't have to worry about it and upgrade to a new system like the Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 # RVI94FR. This way you have reliable braking that you aren't trying to doctor to make usable.

Robin, Thanks for the parts advice. The Brake Buddy Stealth works great; the only drawback is the poor designed connector so at the cost of a new system it makes sense to improve the system I already have. I'm fully capable of functionally rewiring this in my shop, probably more so than most of your customers and not concerned. I may post the procedure in the future to help others.

Hi, l installed some of the components of the RVi Shadow 2 in my 2025 Ford Maverick. Being a retired electrician, I used parts I was familiar with for installing it under the hood. I ordered the following parts from Menards. Phoenix Support System 1/8" 1/4"Min. Max. flange thickness 3/4" EMT 1/2" rigid flange clip with side conduit "push-in" clip Model# FS2-4 CP12, also 1" EMT 3/4" rigid flange clip Model# F2-4 CP16. These were used to hold the long silver evac tube. I used a 4 eleven (4 and 11/16"blank cover with a half-inch knockout to mount the sensor box to. I would like to send pictures for a much easier understanding. Please let me know how.
