Troubleshooting Hopkins Brake Buddy Stealth Not Working with Brake Pedal

Updated 09/23/2025 | Published 09/17/2025

Question:

I have installed the stealth brake buddy in the tow car and the controller in the RV. Everything works with the controller and the lights work when the brake pedal is pressed. The problem I am having is the brake buddy will not activate when the pedal in the RV is pressed. It works fine when the red button is pressed. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Chad, it sounds like the red wire of the brake controller of your Brake Buddy Stealth part # HM39530 is not connected to a stoplight circuit that only sees voltage when the brakes are applied. I would check there and let me know what you find as this is almost always the problem when this happens.

@Chad That's awesome! Was it the red wire?

@JamesonC The vehicle was a Mercedes Sprinter chassis with additional options and the brake switch is operated through the bcm/can bus computers. There was a preinstalled connector under the seat to use. I just needed to purchase the opposite end to connect with. Everything is working properly now. Thank you.

@Chad Ah yeah that makes sense! The green connector under the seat right?
