How Many Load Resistors Do I Need To Install Towing LED Boat Trailer With 2024 GMC 3500?

Updated 12/03/2025 | Published 11/05/2025

Question:

Im considering installing these load resistors on my boat trailer with LED lighting to fix an intermittent trailer disconnectedinch issue on my 2024 GMC Sierra 3500. The truck seems to have trouble detecting the trailer because of the LED lights. My question is how many load resistors do I need to solve this issue? One per turn signal wire and one more for the running/tail lights? The problem happens even when Im not using turn signals, so thats why Im wondering if a resistor is also needed on the running lights wire. Thanks

Hi Chase, great question. For your setup, you’ll want to install one load resistor # DI34ZR (which includes two resistors) on each turn signal circuit (left and right) since those are the circuits that typically cause hyper-flashing or detection errors.

However, because your issue happens even when you’re not using the turn signals, it does sound like your GMC is having trouble seeing the trailer’s running light circuit too. In that case, yes, adding an additional resistor on the running light wire will help provide the proper load so the truck consistently detects the trailer.

Hey Chase, how did things go after adding the extra resistor on the running light wire for your Sierra and boat trailer? Did it clear up the intermittent trailer disconnected message? Your results could really help others dealing with the same LED detection issue.

@JesseM thanks for checking back. I ended up not needing the resistors. I ran a light test using the DIC on my truck (2024 GMC) and it somehow acquainted the truck’s computer with the trailer lights. They worked fine after that. Very strange.
