Recommended 7-Way Connector and Brake Controller for a 2024 Honda Pilot Elite

Updated 12/01/2025 | Published 10/11/2025

Question:

Im a bit confused about the tow vehicle wiring options. I would like to pull a tandem axle trailer gross weight less than 5000 lbs using the electric brakes and a 7-round connector. My tow vehicle is a 2024 Honda Pilot Elite. What combination of wiring harnesses and what controller would you recommend? Thanks.

Hey Jeff. To add a 7-Way connector to your 2024 Honda Pilot Elite, all you'll need is the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector item # C35ZV. It will plug directly into an existing connector in the rear cargo area. It also includes the fuses necessary to power the wiring, which are not included from the factory. I have linked the installation instructions below which detail where to find the factory plug and how to route the wires below your Honda.

For a brake controller, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness item # RED74CR. This is a proportional brake controller that automatically adjusts your trailer's braking based on the deceleration of your Pilot. The Liberty has a unique installation method where the main unit is concealed behind your dash and the only part visible is the control knob.

The custom wiring harness included with the Redarc item # RED74CR will plug directly into the factory connector located to the left of the steering column. It is right above the driver fuse box which is where your left foot is at when sitting in the driver's seat. In some cases it's been attached to a larger wiring cluster with brown or blue tape.

What kind of trailer do you have?

Hi Jerrod, I recently purchased a C55325 custom 4-way for my 1993 Ford Ranger and installed it without difficulty. I also purchased a RED74CR 7-way custom harness and a C35ZV brake controller for my 2024 Honda Pilot. I have two trailers: a small box trailer with incandescent tail/stop/turn lights only and a 16 foot ATV trailer with LED tail/stop/turn lights and marker lights. Everything works fine except the turn signals and the stop lights on the small box trailer refuse to work when connected to the Ranger only. They work fine, however when the box trailer is connected to the Honda. All the lights on the ATV trailer work fine with either the Ranger or the Honda. The only difference I can see is that the box trailer is incandescent and the ATV trailer is LED. Shouldn't the 4-way harness work on incandescent and LED bulbs? On the small box trailer I checked the bulbs, the continuity of the wires, the ground, and I installed a new 4-way plug. When the stop/turn lights are given 12 volts directly through the trailer's 4-way connector without the Ranger, the lights work. The Ranger has flashing 12 volts on my meter when tested at the Ranger side of the 4-way connector. Any thoughts? Thank you! Jeffrey Braun

@JeffreyB That sounds frustrating and it's definitely a head scratcher. Incandescent lights require more power provided by the item # C55325 than LED lights. I recommend checking the ground on your Ranger. It'll need to be firmly attached to a bare clean piece of metal.
