Will Adding A Second Motor To My Landing Gear Increase Weight Capacity?

Updated 09/16/2025 | Published 08/27/2025

Question:

On a rv 5th wheel when adding a second motor to the landing gear replacing the following leg will this double the weight capacity or travel speed? The problem i have is an under rated system that struggles since new. “Attitude 28sag” Thanks

Hey Bill,

Adding a second motor is not going to increase the weight capacity. It may increase the travel speed, but the weight capacity is determined by the structural components and gears of the landing gear. A second motor is not going to make those able to hold more weight.

The only way to increase the capacity overall is going to be replacing the landing gear as a whole with something rated for more weight.

Hey Bill, did you decide to replace the landing gear to handle more weight, or are you considering other options? I'm curious because your experience could really help others facing the same issue.

@BillN That is a solid choice, I think you are going to like going with that. You'll have to come back and update me after they are installed. Always happy to help!
