Converting Old Big Tex Utility Trailer To Have Electric Brakes With Lippert Anti Lock Braking System

Published 08/12/2025

Question:

I'm converting an older trailer with no brakes. Can I use these Lippert assemblies if I switch to ABS hubs? It's an early 2000's big tex utility tandem axle. thanks

You absolutely can, Sean, just be aware this 10" 3,500lb brake assembly set # LC73PX is for use with Lippert’s ABS hubs. That means you'd also need to install one of the compatible ABS hub-and-drum assemblies like # LC44PX or # LC24PX for the ABS sensors to all work together with the ABS module and ABS sensors (only available through Lippert).

Since your trailer currently has no brakes, you’ll also need to add brake mounting flanges to your axles if they’re not already welded on, plus wire in a brake controller from your tow vehicle. Let me know the trailer model and axle specs we can help piece the whole upgrade together. If this is too much to handle, you can always use our dealer locator tool linked here: https://www.etrailer.com/installer/near-me

One thing to keep in mind is that you can still use the Lippert ABS braking assembly # LC73PX with normal hubs, and vise versa, but you'd be defeating the purpose of buying the more expensive ABS model brakes and hubs without using the Lippert ABS system.
