What Options Do I Have To Reduce Road Shock On My Ram 2500 When Towing?

Updated 08/05/2025 | Published 07/31/2025

Question:

I have a 2018 RAM 2500 Big Horn Crew Cab with the short bed. I recently purchased a Brinkley Z Air 297 which weighs 10,300 dry and a tongue weight of 980 lbs. I installed a ProPride P3 hitch which weighs 195 lbs. The hitch controls trailer sway pretty well but the bounce is pretty bad. What recommendations do you have for getting the bounce under control? I’m not a fan of air bags and have been considering the Timbren SES and Bilstein shocks to correct the issue. Thanks.

Hey Lonny,

The Timbren Suspension Enhancement # TDR2500D for your vehicle is going to be great at better absorbing the shock when towing so it is less noticeable. I am not too familiar with the Bilstein Shocks but I imagine that paired with the Timbrens is going to do nothing but help. Airbags are going to help more with and tilt or roll you feel so I agree going with the Timbren is the way to go. That kit I mentioned is a custom fit kit so no drilling is required.

Has your Ram been lifted at all or is it stock height?

My truck is at stock height. I’ll definitely go with the Timbren SES. Can you recommend a good shock for towing? Thanks!

@LonnyB We don't have any shocks that are custom fit for your vehicle, we only carry shocks for a trailer. In terms of the weight distribution and front Timbrens, it won't hurt. All it is going to do is improve your ride. It may not be needed at all with the rear ones and your distribution hitch. I typically recommend seeing how it does without, and then if it is needed adding the front kit # TDDF974A. The Bilstein shocks look solid, we just do not carry that brand so it would have to be purchased elsewhere.

Nick, I forgot to mention that I have a weight distribution hitch. Should I also install the Timbren SES on the front of the truck, as well? Thanks Lonny
