Marine Grade Brake Recommendation for a 5K Axle and 6 on 5-1/2" Bolt Pattern

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/14/2025

Question:

Im looking for a marine grade drum brake kit. I need brake assembly’s, hubs, bearing/seals, brake lines, and an actuator. The trailer is a dual axle. Axles rated for 5k, 6 x 5.5”, on 15” wheels. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well first of all, Doug, you get a gold star for the information you provided. Thank you!

We've got some drum brakes like the kit # AKFBBRK-7-D that have a Dacromet finish, but none of the hub/drum kits for a 5K axle have that kind of a finish so only like half of your brake system will be what we would consider marine grade.

What I recommend doing is going with the DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit # DE28YR instead. Not only is the whole kit covered, but the Maxx coating is rated for over 1,000 hours salt spray resistance which is well over what others have rated their marine coatings for.

This means we'll be looking at a few different parts because of this, but this system will definitely last longer than anything else in the brake category (aside from the DeeMaxx stainless steel kit, that is).

To round out the DeeMaxx system you'll need the following:

- DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit # DE28YR (1 per axle)
- Bearing Kit # BK3-110 (2 per axle)
- DeeMaxx Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # DE57SR
- Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX89FR

Would you rather have more of a marine setup like I mentioned above, or are you more set on the drum-type brakes?

Hey Doug, did you decide to go with the DeeMaxx disc brake setup for your trailer, or are you still considering the drum-type brakes? I'd love to hear what you chose, as it could help others looking for a marine-grade brake solution.
