Can 2017 Ford F-150 Carry More Than 500 lbs of Tongue Weight

Updated 06/17/2025 | Published 06/11/2025

Question:

Questions about max towing and max tongue weights using this 76136 hitch which has max weights of 6,000 / 900, but then considering the following: Tow vehicle is 2017 F150 Reg Cab 6.5’ bed that is not equipped with an OEM towing package. Ford says max towing and tongue weights for this vehicle are 5,000 / 500 so this 76136 hitch is rated more than well enough to handle 5,000 / 500 presumably. Please confirm. 1 Are Ford’s 5,000 / 500 “bumper attached” hitch receiver maximums or frame mounted hitch receiver such as 76136 maximums? With 76136 installed, I want to know if I can safely exceed Ford’s 5,000 / 500 figures and take advantage of the 6,000 / 900 capacity of 76136. I’m seeking to tow a tear trailer and also YAKIMA gear see below. 2 A hitch extender is said to reduce capacities by 50 so if I installed a dual hitch extender into 76136 that would allow me to not only pull a trailer with the lower 2” receiver and a tow bar ball with a 3” rise to get to 19” trailer height but also mount a YAKIMA EXO SwingBase to the upper 2” receiver, would the max weight for the trailer be reduced to 2,500 50 of 5,000 or 3,000 50 of 6,000 and would max tongue weight be reduced to 250 50 of 500 or 450 50 of 900? I understand tongue weight in this case to be the weight of any YAKIMA SwingBase gear and contents as well as the trailer tongue weight which should not exceed 15 of the gross trailer weight including its contents. Correct?

Hey Don, welcome back! You are always going to be limited by the lowest number when it comes to towing/tongue weight capacity. Even though the hitch is rated higher you're stuck with 500 lbs as the max.

It is as you said, the tongue weight includes the Yakima EXO with gear plus the tongue weight of your trailer. If you aren't sure about your tongue weight I recommend getting a scale like # BTBRV27FR or even a Weigh Safe ball mount # WS56KR. I'm not sure how much your tongue weight is overall with the trailer and EXO but if it is under 500 lbs you can still carry both.

I recommend using the Patriot Hitches Drop Hitch Stacked Receivers for 2" Hitches # PH73NR. This gives you stacked receivers to tow the trailer and carry the EXO without reducing the tongue weight of your hitch. It is also adjustable for a max rise/drop of 10" so you can get everything nice and level.

Were you ever able to figure out a different way to mount the GearWarrior?

Thanks for the thorough response. I’ll check out those scale options. Thanks. So the Patriot product is considered an adapter not an extension so using it won’t drop my trucks tongue weight limit 50% from 500 to 250 like an extension would? If so that’s great! I have not yet found a solution for attaching the EXO GearWarrior to the Yakima JetStream cross bars. I’ve posed the question to Yakima as a suggestion. Could you do the same? They are more apt to value it coming from e-trailer.

@Don that is correct. The stacked receivers like the one here from Patriot Hitches are built in a way that they don't cause that reduction. I can reach out to Yakima but I don't have high hopes about it. They're great about responding to us but if it is outside of the norm they typically say no or we don't know since it wasn't intended to be used that way.
