Recommended Brake Controller for a 2025 Mazda CX-70

Updated 09/26/2025 | Published 04/21/2025

Question:

I have a 25 CX-70 that I had the dealer install the OEM hitch and harness after my purchase. They did not install the brake controller and I am determining if I want to have them do that or install another one myself. The Mazda OEM controller appears to be one of the Curt models that requires disassembling the dash and drilling a hole to install the knob. I was looking at wireless ones instead. You list the Curt Echo as comparable with the CX-70 with factory tow but the Tekonsha Prodigy RF as not compatible. Since the Prodigy connects between the tow vehicle and trailer via th standard 7 pin connector, why is it not compatible?

Hey Andrew congrats on the new SUV! The Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Brake Controller item # TK94FR is compatible with any vehicle that has a 7-way connector. This is a better choice than the Curt Echo item # C51180. It's far more reliable and easy to use once you get it set up.

They are both proportional controllers which means they will sense the amount of braking applied and apply the trailer brakes in an equal amount. The big differences are that the Echo item # C51180 does not permanently install on the trailer like the RF item # TK94FR does. Both of them plug into your Mazda's 7-Way and completely eliminate the need to dismantle your dash.

What kind of trailer are you pulling?

Hey Andrew, did you decide to go with the Tekonsha Prodigy RF or another option for your brake controller? I'm curious to know how it worked out for you, as it could help others who are considering similar setups.
