Do I Need to Modify or Lower Anything on My 2022 RX 450h to Install the Curt Trailer Hitch # C73DR?
Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 03/27/2025 >
Question:
I have a 2022 RX 450h with trailer option wiring in place. I would like to install the CurtC73DR hitch. The instructions indicate because its a hybrid, its not necessary to remove the underbody panel nor is it necessary to cut into the fascia.. Correct? It looks like the hitch will thus go under the panel but what about the exhaust? Does the shape of the hitch allow it to go above the exhaust? None of your photos show this same muffler arrangement. The instructions say ...remove two tabs from the sensor bracket...inch Would this require lowering the underbody panel for access? A few years ago, I installed one of your hitches on my Acura MDX. It was an easy project and worked as advertised. Thanks for that as well.

Hello Chet,
That is correct, you won’t need to remove the underbody or trim any part of your vehicle. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C73DR is a super simple install. The only thing you’ll need to remove is a tie-down hook under the car, and that will stay off. You might run into a little caulking that needs to be trimmed, but if you check out the video I attached, Jesse goes over that at around 3 minutes and 15 seconds (so you can skip right to it). Jesse did not need to to remove the tabs from the sensor bracket, so you should not need to either.
Honestly, I’m not sure why we even rate this hitch at a 5 out of 10 for difficulty, I’d say it’s more like a 2 out of 10. You installed the one on your Acura, so this one should be a breeze.
What do you mainly use the hitch for?

Hey Chet, how did the install of the Curt hitch on your RX 450h turn out? Did it fit smoothly around the exhaust and underbody panel like we expected? Your update could make it easier for others working on the same setup.
