is the Wiggle Room On My Roadmaster Base Plate OK? What are the Outer Holes for on 2001 Mazda Miata?

Question:
What purpose do the outer holes that line up between the main braces and the front braces serve? It seems like something should go there to give strength to the connection besides the carabiners, like another linch pin? Also, the front braces have a lot of wiggle, is that right?

Hey Nancy,
I did not see that information anywhere, so I reached out to my friends at Roadmaster and this was their response: The wiggle is totally normal for our baseplate kits to prevent the rigid energy from the hitch setup from being transferred to the flat towed vehicle's frame. The hole they mention is for a pad lock like our # RM-301 and # RM-302 part numbers so they have the option to lock those arms to the vehicle to prevent them from walking away.
I am sorry for the delay in response, I was waiting for their response.
Are you getting things geared up for your first big trip? Where are you headed?

Hey Nancy, did you end up trying one of the padlocks to secure the arms on your Roadmaster base plate kit? It’d be great to hear if that helped things feel more solid. Your update could make it easier for others wondering about the same wiggle.
