Does the B&W Continuum Really Need the Grease Checked Every 250-500 Miles?
Updated 06/30/2025 | Published 01/21/2025 >
Question:
Page 12 of the BandW Continuum Weight Distribution Hitch Installation Manual discusses required routine maintenance, including this section on lubrication: Before each trip and every 250-500 miles of towing: Grease the head unit using the two grease fittings. Use the method presented on Step 1 of the “GREASE THE HEAD UNIT” section on page 8, when possible. Recommended Grease: Multi-Purpose Lithium Complex Grease - NGLI Grade 2. Im planning a 5 month 10,000 mile trip with my travel trailer. Based on the above, Id have to haul out a grease gun and lubricate the head unit almost every travel day. This seems like an excessive hassle, is this amount/frequency of lubrication really necessary?

Hey Lance,
That does sound excessive, but the B&W Continuum # BW28FR is a bit of a different animal when it comes to how it operates so I do recommend sticking to the rules laid out by B&W. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a grease gun and extra grease on a big trip like that anyways (for other things like your spindles) so to have a smooth experience you'll want to add checking the grease to your daily routine. I think this is more of a preventative measure than it is B&W saying that the Continuum actually NEEDS the grease every day - if it HAS to have more grease put into it that often then something is seriously wrong with the system and I would reach out to B&W about a warranty.
I'm not sure if you already have this system or not, so if you'd rather use a weight distribution that requires a little less maintenance just let me know the GVWR of your trailer and I'd be more than happy to make a different recommendation.
Are you planning on taking a tour of the US for your trip?

Hi Jon, Trip will be around a portion of USA/North-America. I do have a grease gun but having to use it every other day-ish of travel on a long trip doesn't sound like fun. Normally on travel days one wants to get the travel trailer packed up, hitched up, and on the road with minimal fuss. Hitching up is always a bit of fuss (especially with weight distribution hitches), having to remember to dig out the grease gun and go through the lubrication process before hitching up adds another undesirable dimension to the "fuss." Doing it once or twice for a single-destination camping trip is one thing, having to do it many many times on a long trip is much more of a hassle. Trailer is 10,000 lbs GVWR. We've been using the Andersen WDH with OK but not great results - I think it's better suited for lighter trailers. The B&W Continuum seems like a great alternative except for the lubrication hassle. Do you carry or have any plans to carry the Eaz-Lift TR3 weight distribution hitch?
