Is Weight Capacity of Wheel Per Wheel or Per Axle

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 11/30/2024

Question:

Is the weight capacity listed on a rim the maximum weight recommended per axle or per rim? For example one of your rims says 1,870 lbs. Would I double that weight for the axle?

Hi Joey; the 1,870 lb capacity of a wheel like the Dexstar # DEX39FR is per wheel. So on a single axle a pair of wheels could hold 3,740 lbs.

Hey Joey, did the explanation about the wheel’s 1,870‑lb rating per rim clear things up for your setup? Knowing how that worked out could help others figure out axle capacities for their trailers too.
