Replacement 26" Leaf Spring Recommendation for 6K Axles on a 2017 Jayco Eagle

Updated 11/09/2024 | Published 11/08/2024

Question:

I have a 2017 5th wheel Jayco Eagle double axle at 6000 each. Dry weight is 10,700 and GV weight is 12,000. We never overload but get close to the max. One leaf spring broke last year not pleasant experience road side so I ended up replacing all with same 3000lb springs 4 leaf. Now after the fact and learning more about suspensions I am worried the current springs are the minimum required and was thinking of adding beefier leaf springs to maybe 3500 lbs. Is that something I can safely do? The old springs I removed I keep for spares just in case measure like this: 15 1/4 to 15 3/8 from center to center the two are just a bit off each other. When I measure from center spring fastener bolt not sure of exact name to center eye it is 13 inches on both sides. Do I need a 15 1/4 inch spring or 26 inch spring? I dont ever plan on overloading trailer but maybe comfort level going heavier would be nice. Any thoughts for me? Thank you very much

Hey George, sorry to hear about your previous experience with your leaf spring setup. I've been stranded on the side of the road because of a trailer malfunction as well and it definitely isn't a pleasant experience so I understand where you're coming from for sure.

Picking up some heftier leaf springs sounds like a great idea - I typically encourage people to give themselves some cushion for things like this (suspension and couplers) so you can be confident that loading your trailer all the way up to the GVWR.

What I'm getting from your question is that you need a 26" long leaf spring (or something in that ballpark) so I recommend the TruRyde # TRU52FR rated for 7,000 lb axle. This one measures 25-1/4" from center eye to center eye but since it's normal for leaf springs to stretch out some over time this will still work.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Jon, Thank you very very much for your quick response. You have confirmed my thoughts. Before I order the Springs you recommended, I have a couple more questions. 1) With 6 leafs now instead of 4, this will raise trailer by 1 to 2 inches? 2) Will I also need to purchase a new U Bolt kit to fit the 6 leafs and which one do you recommend? 3) I have the CRE3000 so I want to upgrade all since pulling it apart so I want to upgrade to wet bolts and my current shackes are 2 1/4 inch center hole to center hole. Is the MR46ZR the correct wet bolt kit? The CRE3000 rubber all seems good and not cracked so assuming it is good. Just trying to confirm and make sure I order everything I need for this job at one time so again, thank you very much for your response. George B

@GeorgeB The leaf thickness is 3/8" so you'll be adding a total of 3/4" to the height of the leaf spring stack. You should be good with your current U-Bolt kit, but it would be good to make sure you have the thread length to accommodate that much more just in case. As far as replacement U-Bolts go, we have the Dexter Axle Kit # APUBR-8 that has 7" long U-Bolts which will be enough to accommodate your 3" axle and the 6-Leaf spring I mentioned above. Since your current shackles are 2-1/4" long on center, the MORryde Suspension Upgrade Kit # MR46ZR is exactly what you're needing. Hopefully this helps you out!
