Durable Parts to Flat Tow 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Tradesman

Updated 08/30/2024 | Published 08/22/2024

Question:

Hello. We just bought a 2019 Ram 1500 Tradesman Classic for flat towing behind our motorhome. Im trying to figure out base plates, hitches etc. GVWR is 6900 so wed like something durable enough to handle that. Plus one that stows easily and stays on the front of the truck. Can you recommend something? We have a stowmaster on our jeep now but not sure if we can get base plates for our truck that fít with the stowmaster. Sue

Hey Susan,

I can for sure recommend parts for you to flat tow your 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Tradesman, and it's smart to emphasize durability and strength to make sure your truck is safe behind your motorhome. You're right about the Stowmaster not being able to connect with the Roadmaster base plates that fit your Ram, so a new tow bar is needed, and what I recommend are the following:

- Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-52289-5

- Roadmaster BlackHawk 2 All-Terrain Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-422

The Direct-Connect base plates are nice because their arms are removable so when you're not flat towing your truck still looks great. Then for the BlackHawk, it's got a 10,000 lb capacity to easily handle the weight of your truck, it has folding arms like you asked, and even has cable guides on the side so you can run the wiring and safety cables like # RM-645 and keep them up off the ground.

So that'll be what you need for the connections, and just to be thorough, if you also need the wiring and supplemental brake system, I recommend the Roadmaster wiring and Demco brake system for their reliability. The parts are the Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit # RM-152-98146-7 and Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo Flat Tow Brake System # SM99251.

Kyle, thank you for all that info. The folks installing it for us mentioned a Roadmaster Sterling. Can you explain the difference? The sales lady really couldn't answer much and referred us to you folks. Much appreciated! Sue

@Susan There really isn't much of a difference between the BlackHawk 2 All-Terrain Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-422 and the Roadmaster Sterling All-Terrain Tow Bar # RM-576. The Sterling has an 8k capacity compared to the Blackhawk's 10k, and the Sterling comes with safety cables and a 6-way plug, which the Blackhawk does not. The Blackhawk also has longer arms by a couple inches so it's turning radius is better.
