How is the drive pin attached to the gear head? What keeps the pin in place in the drive gear?

Hey Dave,
The drive pin from the drive head of the awning has two flat sides to match up to the opening in the gear pack # LC78VR. This locks the pin and gear pack together so both will turn at the same time.
