Troubleshooting Hyper Flashing Tail Light After Installing Curt Trailer Wiring Harness # C59496

Updated 06/25/2024 | Published 06/17/2024

Question:

Wired with Curt Powered Taillight converter C59496 went pretty well. However driving the car I am getting a rear left taillight failure warning but taillight is working, just blinking fast. What could be the issue is the unit faulty? I am an electrical engineer and I am pretty sure all connections were good and correct. Would appreciate any advice.

Hey Daniel,

Typically when you experience hyper flashing after installing a trailer wiring harness it's caused by a weak/bad ground. When you installed the Curt # C59496 did you ground it directly to non-painted, bare metal surface? Is it on it's own or did you tie it into another ground?

The Unit did not come with a long wire for gound like power, unlike the video so I did not have any way to route it to battery it was a relatively short lug, I drilled a hole in the car body behind bumper and connected the red wire to it and attached to body with sheet metal screw. If that is the problem I can try to correct but there is not much of a better ground available nearby and the wire supplied did not allow for routing to battery. If you have a solution let me know. the other light works fine btw and when I disconect the yellow no issue reconnect, issue. in either case the unit does not light the left tail light only right. I did not try disconnecting the red wire from the ground when I had the bumper off last night doing my testing, I forgot I was thinking of trying that. ATM I have yellow disconnected and will only have a right turn signal. If you think unit is still good and there is a ground solution I can try that but I am pretty frustrated ATM and only want to pull car apart one more time, SO would like to be sure that I can fix with either a corrective or a new unit. I need to have car available during the day and I am gone for a week next week.

@Daniel For the ground I typically just splice on some extra wire with a butt connector and then run it to the vehicle frame if the harness doesn't come with a long enough ground wire. Does your Bolt have independent wires for each signal or does your brake signal run through the turn signal wires?

@KevinC I Had no info that the bolt has a independent brake singal wire I watched a few videos and they all grounded the red wire. Does a poor ground allow the right signal & tail to work but not the left? Because those do.

@Daniel Poor grounding is the likely cause but a three wire system with an independent brake signal wire would need the red wire spliced into it.
