Question:
Hi, I have a 1999 REMEQ boat trailer that is GVWR 1804. Need to replace the tires, hub, and springs currently 4 leaf. Taking a remote fishing trip where most of the drive is highway, but last 4 hours is pretty rough logging dirt roads. Would it be smart to go with a higher rated spring 1250 vs 925 ? Also, D vs R for the tires 175/80R13 currently and can I go with a slightly larger tire at all? Thanks!

Hey Lyle,
Starting with the leaf springs you'll first need to measure your current springs so that we can narrow down the available fits. Increasing the capacity of the leaf spring can help with sagging and bouncing, but you'll typically have a stiffer ride quality as well. If you're finding that your leaf springs keep flattening out then upgrading the capacity can help.
For the hubs we'll need to know the bearings and seals your current hub uses or you can measure with calipers # PTW80157 the spindle at points B, C, and D on the diagram below. We'll also need to know the wheel bolt pattern so that the wheels can still bolt up to the hub.
For new wheels and tires you could possibly go larger but you'll need to check your clearance horizontally between the tire and body/frame of the trailer as well as the vertical clearance between the tire and fender/wheel well. We recommend at least 3" vertically and 1.5" horizontally to accommodate suspension travel. Let me know how much space you have and I can see how much larger you can go.
I'm not sure what you mean by "D vs R" for tires but I'm assuming you're debating on Bias ply vs Radial ply. If so, bias have stronger sidewalls and are great low-cost options for trailers where you don't care as much about ride quality. Radial tires offer a softer ride quality and will end up lasting longer, but come with a higher price tag. If this is a trailer that you don't take out a lot then bias ply tires are the better option.
I've attached a few diagrams below to help you measure each component so that we can find the correct replacements.
