Troubleshooting Trailer Disconnect Message When Pulling Toy Hauler Behind 2020 Ram 2500
Published 03/08/2024 >
Question:
Hello. 2020 Ram 2500 towing a 2016 toy hauler. I connect my 7 pin and all electrical signals work including electric brakes. Go down the road and my dashboard dings and indicates trailer is disconnected. Dings again, trailer is connected. 40-50 times on a 2 hour drive. The 7pin is still connected when I stop to check. I’ve cleaned the terminals. I’ve checked my trucks 7 pins and verified each pin has power. I think my truck isn’t communicating with my trailer. Any advice? I’m looking at your magnetic 7 pin connector made for my truck. Is this a potential solve based on other Ram owner purchases? Thank you.

With issues like that it could be a number of things which is causing your 2020 Ram 2500 to show up the trailer is disconnected. Typically most trucks will use the brake controller to test and verify a trailer is connected. It could be you are picking up a short in the wiring from the 7-way connector, the junction box or you have bad ground terminals on your brake assemblies. I would start by inspecting the connections in your 7-way to determine if any of them look bent and may not be making the best contact. From there move to the wiring junction box to verify there are no places on the wiring which appear damaged and the wiring is tightly connected inside the box. While there also check the ground connections to ensure they are not loose or have corrosion built up under the connectors. Finally check the ground connections for each of the brake assemblies as well as the power wire connections.
The EZ Connector Magnetic 7-Way # 319-R7-02 would only help resolve your issue is the issue is with the 7-way connector which is a 50/50 shot on trailers with electric brakes.
