It is not uncommon for certain factory brake controllers to have issues with electric over hydraulic brakes. This would be the first we have heard of this issue with a 2023 Ford F-350, but it is possible that the brake controller in your ford is simply not compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes. There may be an adapter module available depending on what brand of actuator you have on your trailer so that is one option. If you can tell me the make and model of your actuator I can see if we have a compatible adapter.

With some of the newer controllers, the manufacturer can actually send software updates to the controller. So it may be worth checking with Ford to see if an update is required in order to operate EOH brakes.

Another potential option is to replace the factory controller with an aftermarket controller. Most any aftermarket brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 or Redarc Tow Pro Liberty # RED24FR will be compatible with EOH brakes. So making this switch is basically guaranteed to resolve the issue and allow your trailer brakes to work normally. With the Redarc controller you have the option for a plug-and-play install using the # 331-TPH-007 wiring harness. Generally, this is the approach I recommend.

I have a 2018 f250 towing a tri axle trailer with EOH brakes, when applying brakes it takes time to brakes to apply or not at all !!!

@Duane Yep so it is common for OEM brake controllers to have issues with EOH brakes. The best solution for this is to use an aftermarket brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. Basically everything stated in the answer above will apply to your situation too.

I bought the Redarc Tow Pro Liberty brake controller from etrailer and the wiring harness adaptor. It's a 2023 F350. Went to abandon the factory brake controller and found that the factory brake controller has a data cable coming out of it that goes to a module. This particular version of the truck will not work by simply unplugging the brake controller and plugging in an aftermarket controller. If you have any ideas of what to try next I would like to know what they are. I also called Torklift and asked them if they had seen this exact problem and they hadn't. The guy I talked said it is possible to make the red wire, the 12v charging circuit, constant by bypassing the whole thing by running a wire from the battery. He said that there would probably be error messages in the dash that might not go away.

@Don Yes I have heard that some newer Super Duty trucks do not have a simple 4 wire brake controller harness. They communicate with a module through data or bus wiring. Unless that module is reconfigured or disabled, the aftermarket controller may not be recognized. This may require software changes using FORScan or a dealer tool so the truck knows a new controller is present.

@JesseM I am now hesitant to install the aftermarket brake controller because of all the features of the truck that will not work after going around the factory system. The trailer memory feature, the trailer anti-sway, the pro-trailer backup, ( I don't need or use), trailekjlkjlkjl .-

@Jesse I am now hesitant to install the aftermarket brake controller because of all the features of the truck that will not work after going around the factory system. The trailer memory feature, the trailer anti-sway, the pro-trailer backup, ( I don't need or use), trailer tpms, trailer information on the dash such as grade %, mpg, towing distance, engine, transmission and engine brake control, adjustments the truck makes when towing with adaptive cruise and lane centering turned on. I believe that all of these things are integrated with the truck recognizing a towed trailer. I think this is a problem for Ford to solve.
