Should a Fuse or Circuit Breaker Be Added to a Charge Line for a Camper and How to Know What Size

Updated 07/26/2023 | Published 07/25/2023

Question:

I am adding a second 105Ah battery to my camper. Battery number one is charged by a DC/DC from the truck, solar, and shore station 110. I am connecting the batteries with 6AWG wiring per the manufacturers recommendation. Manufacturer recommends a circuit breaker or fuse also. What type breaker or fuse do you recommend and what amperage? Thank you.

I recommend going with a circuit breaker over a fuse. You will not have to replace the breaker when it switches like you will with a fuse when it blows. If you use one of the breakers that have I included below, they will also automatically reset itself in the event that the circuit is overloaded.

You will likely need either a 40 amp breaker # PK54540 or a 30 amp breaker # PK54530.

Typically a 40amp circuit breaker is used for a charge line going to a battery, but most campers have 30amp systems. So you will just want to check what amperage the system in your camper is designed for and go with that size breaker. It will most likely be the 30 amp breaker.
