I see 2 completely different Curt receivers for my 2023 VW ID 4. How do I know which one I will need?

It sounds like you do not have a receiver on your 2023 Volkswagen ID 4 which means you will need the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C47JR. The other Curt # C57JR is designed to bolt in place of the 1-1/4" factory receiver and gives you a 2" opening.
I recommend installing the 4-Way # C59496 when you install the receiver. This is the connector commonly used on small trailers you may tow and will also allow for Auxiliary Lights # C53201 if you are using a hitch mounted accessory which impairs the view of your tail lights.
