Question:

Can these be used directly connected to cargo on the short end with the chain looped through a d-ring or stake pocket and hooked back to itself? Thanks

Yes, you could attach the Durabilt Ratchet Chain Binder w/ T-Handle and Chain for 5/16" to 3/8" Chains # DU42MR could be used to attach to cargo and through a d-ring to itself. Since the clevis doesn't come with a clip to prevent it from unlatching you would have to have constant tension on the chain to prevent it from just falling loose. You'd also need to know the capacity of the D-Ring so that you don't overload it and have it break off.

You'd most likely be better off using a safety cable like the Roadmaster 64" Single Hook, Straight Safety Cables - 8,000lbs # RM-645 to haul your cargo.
