Question:

Hi - I have a 2013 Ford F150 with a stock TBC. When I tow my single axle trailer that has electric brakes, I get a constant “trailer connected”, “trailer disconnected” message on the dash. I am thinking that maybe the controller is looking for a dual axle brake system, and maybe it is not drawing quite enough current. Does this sound possible? Do you have anything that might help with this problem?

There are a few issues which could be causing the trailer disconnected message you are getting on the dash of your 2013 Ford F-150. Generally the Vehicle Side Connector # PK11893 or Trailer Connector # PK12706 are where we see most issues. You will want to check the contacts on both connectors for any broken or corroded contacts. Dielectric Grease # 11755 can help reduce corrosion and oxidation forming on the terminals which can cause shorts.

You will want to check all the connectors for the brake wiring on your trailer as well as the wiring connectors on your vehicle to ensure all the wiring is secured and making good contact. The trailer disconnected message you are getting is caused by the controller not seeing a complete connection through the brake system. If you have another trailer with electric brakes you can road test with it and it can help you to determine if the error reoccurs on your F-150 the issue is on the truck side otherwise if you have no issues the wiring issue is with the trailer.
