Troubleshooting An Atwood Air Command RV AC System that Only Blows Hot Air
Updated 11/08/2022 | Published 11/07/2022 >
Question:
Using the dual mode feature for Heat and Cool, the air conditioner stopped cooling and only the heat pump worked. When we tried to remedy this by changing the thermostat to Cool only, heat came out of the vents for several minutes. We left it sit overnight, set the thermostat for Cool and 60F and the air coming out was getting hot. Do I need a new thermostat or a new control board? Is there a factory reset? Thanks.

It sounds to me like you may have an issue with your compressor or a Freon leak. Do you hear the compressor kick on at all when you have the temperature set low? If not, then the compressor is possibly shot. AC's are closed systems so if you had a Freon leak there would not be a way to repair it and it would need to be replaced.
The thermostat # AT15029 is functioning since you're telling it to kick on and it's blowing hot air so I wouldn't think that is the cause. There is a temperature probe that does sit up in the unit that actually detects the temperature and tells the unit to kick on but that also wouldn't cause it to blow hot air when you have it set for 60.
The only other thing I could think of that may be having an issue is the controller, which while it is replaceable isn't a part we carry to replace. The controller takes the commands from your thermostat and tells the rooftop unit when to kick on. If yours is having an issue and communicating wrong then replacement is the only option.
I recommend having a licensed technician give it a look and see if the compressor is bad or if there is a Freon leak. If it can't be fixed then I recommend getting away from the Atwood brand altogether since they're out of business and switching to a system like the Furrion # FR88PR.
