Parts To Tow 5th Wheel and Gooseneck Trailers with a 2018 Ram 1500 6-1/2' Bed

Question:

2018 ram 1500 6.5’ bed How do you use the companion 5th wheel hitch with the release lever being inside the bed instead of the wheel well? Is there enough clearance under the 5th wheel hitch to fit the tool?

Great question!

The B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # BWGNRK1309 latch pin system being in the bed means you can only use the B&W Offset Ball # BWGNXA4685 and the fixed B&W Companion Hitch # BWRVK3500 as the Companion has room for the pin when the head is removed.

Since your 2018 Ram 1500 has a 6-1/2' bed you'll be really pushing 5th wheel trailer to truck cab clearance so you would need to use the sliding Companion but unfortunately that can't be used with this latching system.

With this being the case you'll need to remove your current gooseneck hitch and then I recommend picking up the Reese Base Rail Kit # RP50142-58 to pair with the B&W Patriot 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3270, and then you can use the Curt # 16055 to tow your gooseneck trailer.

It's not as pretty of a setup as the B&W gooseneck and Companion system but it will let you tow what you're needing to tow without fear of hitting the cab of your Ram.
