Troubleshooting An Advent Air RV Air Conditioner That's Leaking Water Into The Trailer

Question:

Hello, my new Advent ACM150 seemd to be working okay and then it started leaking water inside. It had be running for a few hours continuosley as it was a hot day. Any ideas on what is going on or what I should do? The trailer has never taken a road trip, only parked so I doubt debrs in the drain would be the problem. Probably only 25 - 30 hours of running time on it.

If your brand new Advent Air RV Air Conditioner # ACM150 is already leaking into the trailer then there could only be two causes:

1. The gasket isn't properly set and is allowing the water that is draining onto the roof to seep back in.

2. Something is preventing the water from leaking out of the drain pan onto the roof and allowing it to build up enough to pour back inside or there's a manufacturer defect in the drain pan that's allowing the water to drip right in.

I recommend taking a look at gasket and the drain pan and seeing if it's actually allowing water to drain onto the roof. Let me know what you find and we can keep troubleshooting to fix the issue.

I don’t see a drain pan under the condenser specifically unless it just drains into the entire bottom of the housing “tray”? Do I need to remove the styrofoam insulation to get to the condenser drain pan?

@JamesC The whole bottom of the # ACM150 is the drain pan. The holes for the pan are towards the front only, which I'm not a fan of because that can allow water to pool if the unit isn't angled down in the front. You would not need to remove the Styrofoam cover to get the unit to drain. If yours isn't draining then check the drain holes at the front of the pan for clogs. If there's no clogs you can tighten the two front bolts a bit more than the rear two bolts to angle the front of the unit down slightly to allow gravity to pull the water towards the front and out the drain holes.

@KevinC This is helpful and the drain holes were not clogged. The dripping of the unit into the trailer only happens after running for long periods on hot, high humidity days. Is there something else that could be causing this or I can do to prevent it?

@Jamesc That's is unfortunately a somewhat common issue if the temperatures are up there. There should be a freeze sensor on the condenser coils that's designed to switch the unit to defrost mode to remove any ice build up and then all of the water should drain through the drain holes. Water sitting could potentially freeze and lock up the unit. There isn't much you can do besides making sure that sensor is good, checking/cleaning out the drain holes, and having your unit angled down slightly in the front so the water drains forward.
