My Breakaway Switch Reads 7.6V Does That Mean It Is Defective?

Updated 07/05/2022 | Published 07/02/2022

Question:

I just installed a Curt 52025. With the truck running, sending 13+ volts to the charger black wire, the voltage out of the blue wire is only 7.6 volts with the breakaway switch disconnected. Shouldnt it be 12 volts? Is this unit defective?

Yes, you should be receiving 12v with your Replacement Charger for Curt Soft Trac I and II Trailer Breakaway Kits # C52025 installed.

A voltage reading of 7.6V is a definite indicator that there is something causing a power drop somewhere in your wiring.

The usual culprit is a corroded or broken wire somewhere along your wiring. I recommend tracing the blue wire and inspect it for any breaks, frays, or pinches.

Additionally, there may also be a possibility that the circuit board part of your breakaway system is corroded and would need replacing. Since we do not offer circuit board replacements, you'd need an entire new breakaway system.

I have linked an FAQ, as well as a list of our breakaway kits that we offer.
