How Does the Curt Breakaway Battery Charger C52025 Work
Published 01/13/2022 >
Question:
I’m trying to figure out how this charger works and if it needs to be replaced on my trailer. I’m getting power into the charger but no power out of the charger it is not hooked up to the battery when I am testing it, in case this is relevant. 1. Should I always be getting power out of the charger when it is connected to power? 2. Does it need to be connected to the battery to complete some sort of circuit before it will show power coming out of the charger and into the battery? 3. Does the charger have some sort of shut off when the battery is full in order to prevent overcharging? 4. Does it also know when the battery is draining and when to start charging the battery again?

The Curt Breakaway Battery Charger part # C52025 only charges the breakaway battery while the trailer is plugged into the vehicle and the vehicle's battery charge line circuit is active (it could be constant on or keyed with the ignition). Once the trailer is connected and the circuit is active, the charger will provide a trickle charge to the breakaway battery. There is a shutoff feature built-in to prevent overcharging.
The breakaway battery should not have to be hooked up for the charger to send power but you can easily test this if you have the battery nearby. It's a cost effective part that is very easy to replace if yours goes bad.
