Comparing Tongue Weight Capacity of 2022 Subaru Crosstrek to Trailer Hitches That Fit
Updated 03/14/2022 | Published 03/13/2022 >
Question:
Hello, Many hitches sold on here for the crosstrek indicate tongue weight capacities above 500 pounds. The crosstrek depending on the model has a tongue weight capacity of 100-150 lbs. Am I missing something here, or can you use the higher tongue weight number indicated by the hitch, as long as you dont exceed the payload of the vehicle?

Expert Reply:
You are correct, hitches for the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek like the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98912 have a max tongue weight over 500 lbs, or in this case 525 lbs. This is simply the tongue weight capacity of the hitch itself. The capacity is listed this way for the Crosstrek and every other vehicle.
The main reason is because we know the capacity of the hitch, while the tongue weight capacity of vehicles may vary depending on factory configurations. This is especially true for those with a tow package option. Since the maximum tongue weight of your 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is 150 lbs that will be the most you can carry, regardless of the capacity of the hitch. You will always be limited by the weakest component/capacity whether that is your vehicle or the hitch.
