The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR will not always calibrate unless it has a trailer connected. It seems to vary based on the vehicle as not all the trailer systems will work when a trailer is not connected to the 7-way on your 2017 GMC Yukon XL.
Since you tested the controller by pushing the button you know that it does have power going to the unit, and a good ground. Pushing on the brake is what will begin the calibration process when you have a trailer connected. If you do not get any lights when pushing on the brake pedal as you are driving with the trailer connected you may have a bad brake switch or faulty Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness # 331-TPH-010. A Test Light # PTW2992 will allow you to ensure that you are getting power to the red wire on the harness from the brake switch.
