Video Transcript for Comprehensive Review: Shackle Strap

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, I'm gonna take a look at this 2 1/4-inch long shackle strap. Now this shackle strap will connect your double-eye spring to the rear hangar of your single axle trailer or to the A equalizer of a multi axle trailer. Basically using this, it'll shackle the two components together, instead of bolting them directly. It allows for the necessary pivot of the springs. This is a steel construction.

Few specs on this. Now, the length, when we say it's a 2 1/4-inch. It's not the overall length. When they talk about the length on a shackle strap, it's the measurement from the center of this hole to the center of this hole. So if we take our ruler and if we go center to center, you can see there's your 2 1/4-inch measurement.

Now, the overall dimension from one end to the other, 3 1/4 inches long, width on it, 1 1/4 inches wide, and 3/16 of an inch thick. And the two bolt holes on here, the diameter of those bolt holes are 9/16 of an inch. But that should do it for the review on the 2 1/4-inch long shackle strap.

  • Are Trailer Leaf Spring Shackles Supposed to be Angled or Totally Straight
You want leaf spring shackles to be at a slight angle as that prevents the springs from flipping around to the other side of the equalizer over uneven terrain. I attached a picture that shows what the angle is typically like.

  • How to Determine Hanger Spacing for Tandem Axle Trailer Suspension with 26 Inch Springs
Thank you for providing the specs for the suspension components that you already have. Correct hanger spacing really depends on the components being used such as springs, hangers and equalizers. Most of the hanger spacing dimensions that we have are based on our preassembled kits, so we will use that as a foundation for your setup. First, I would either replace all of the front and rear hangers with 2-1/2 inch tall hangers like part # 115918 or replace just the center hangers with 2-1/2...

  • Are Shackles Necessary For A Single Axle Utility Trailer?
Hello Greg. Generally, yes, shackles are required for any single axle utility trailer. The diagram below will show you the components of a typical single axle setup. You will have shackles on the rear hangers only. This is because as your axle hits bumps in the road it not only gets pushed up, but also back. With the shackle in the back you will have the best ride quality and suspension travel. Without shackles the suspension would likely be quite rough. The shackles should not be flattening...

  • Suspension Kits for Different Tandem Axle Trailers
Hi Richard, are you looking for replacement equalizers and shackle straps? Are the 7.5" and 8" measurements the width of your equalizers from center hole to center hole (measurement A in the attached picture)?

  • How To Determine Fit of the Never Fail Triple Axle Suspension Upgrade Hardware Kit
In order to determine if the Never Fail Triple Axle Suspension Upgrade Hardware Kit part # LC281288 will work on your 2004 Thor Vortex 385 5th Wheel Trailer you will need to confirm a few things. For starters, the bushings and bolts are designed for 1-3/4" wide double eye leaf springs that use a 9/16" bolt so you must make sure this is what you have. Then, the shackle straps included with this kit are 3-1/8" long so that will need to match what you have as well. This is the most common...

  • Replacing Shackle Straps After Switching To A Taller Equalizer
Hi Mike, With the height of your equalizer increasing an inch you might need to switch to 3-1/8" shackle straps # TRSL313 to keep the leaf spring stack level but this isn't an exact science so your leaf springs could end up sitting too close to the equalizer and will bind up. Your suspension should form a 'W' shape with the equalizer and shackle straps for proper suspension travel. Too far in or out with your shackles will cause binding or will flip the axles down on the equalizer. Because...

  • Replacement Shackle Straps for a Triple Axle 2016 Forest River XLR Nitro Thunderbolt 395 AMP
Hey Bryan, thanks for reaching out! In order to get you some replacement shackles I'll need you to measure the length of your shackles, which is center eye to center eye (see attached photo). The most common lengths are 1-1/4" and 3-1/8" so for just replacement shackle straps you'd need # TRSL225 or # TRSL313 respectively. These come in a quantity of 1 so you'll need to adjust the quantity to match how many you're planning on replacing.

  • Why do Some Trailer Suspension Kits Have Longer Equalizer Hangers
The reality is that not every manufacturer makes their suspension kits to the same standard sizes. Some use taller hangers with wider equalizers and some might use a taller equalizer with a shorter center hanger. It really just comes down to the preference of the manufacturer and what gives them the ride height and distance between tires that works the best for them. Also the fact that some trailer leaf springs happen to be longer or shorter plays into what is best solution as well. Ideally...

  • Raising Trailer Suspension To Clear Rear Leaf Spring From Hitting The Crossmember
It appears you may have installed shackle straps which are longer than what you may have had. It appears your straps are either 3-1/8" # TRSL313 or 3-1/2" # TRSL350 and you likely only need a 2-1/4" # TRSL225. This would move the mounting point closer to the axle and raise the trailer approximately 1/2". To get enough height to clear your crossmember you will likely need the Lift Kit # RR23QX. This will allow you to raise the suspension either 1-1/4" or 2-1/4" to clear your rear crossmember. On...

  • Replacement 3,500 lb Leaf Springs & 7-3/4 Inch Wide Equalizer
Thanks for all that info and we can get you exactly what you are needing. Since you have a 2-3/8" axle that would be a 3,500 lb axle, so you want leaf springs rated for that weight. The concern with springs that exceed the rating of your axle is that they will give you a very stiff, rigid ride, so you want to stay with the correctly rated springs. I'll go ahead and list out the parts you need, with a couple notes. First is that leaf springs elongate slightly over time, which is why the...

The correct replacement for a Dexter 13-10 Equalizer is the Triangular Equalizer part # TREQ310, not the Curved Equalizer part # TREQE1. If you want to upgrade, the Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers part # LC279688 would work but you might want to go with a slightly shorter shackle strap like part # TRSL200 or part # TRSL225 due to the equalizer being longer. I have attached a list of our shackle straps below as well. The upgraded equalizer is going to be a night and day difference in regards...

  • How to Pick Out Correct Shackle Length for Trailer Suspension
Well shackle length is mainly based on the height difference between the front and rear hangers. The rear hanger normally doesn't hang as low as the front so that the shackle can offset the difference and add the ability to move. What is the height difference from the frame of the trailer to the hole on both hangers? With that we can see what would work best as a shackle. You want to go with the shackle length that allows the spring to sit as level as possible. The most popular size is...

  • Why Are Shackle Straps Hitting Frame When Re-Building Trailer Suspension
The problem seems to be mostly that your shackle straps are hitting the frame, and the reason for this is almost certainly because the 3-1/8" Shackle Strap # TRSL313 you are using are too long. The other possibility was the hangers being too short but that is unlikely considering the lengths you gave. What I recommend is trying out the 2-5/8" shackle straps from the the # APT8 kit you have, as those are the typical length for a tandem axle trailer, while 2-1/4" straps such as # TRSL225...

The 7,000 lb double-eye leaf spring we have that is closest to 26" is the 24-7/8" long 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 7,000-lb Trailer Axles # e64SR. Assuming yours have flattened a good amount (which will definitely be true if the trailer is older), these will work out as a good replacement. You mentioned hardware, and I'm assuming you were referring to U-bolts, shackle bolts and straps. You'll need to measure your shackle straps but you can use the following: - U-Bolt Kit # APUBR-9 -...

  • Are Longer Shackle Straps Needed with Lippert Road Armor Equalizer
You'll be find with the same shackle length you're currently using, as the height difference is only a 1/4 inch. At the time you replace the equalizer, I'd also recommend replacing the shackle links, as they can see a lot of wear. The # TRSL225 2-1/4 inch shackle links would work great for you.

For a 3500-lb axle, it's most likely a 2-3/8" diameter so you can use the U-Bolt Kit for Mounting 3,500-lb, Round Trailer Axles - 5-1/2" Long U-Bolts # APUBR-1. If this is a boat trailer or utility trailer that might be sitting outside a lot you may want to consider upgrading to the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit # CE23002 since they're zinc plated and will help fight off corrosion a bit better. For shackles, the most popular size shackle is 2-1/4" like the part # TRSL225, but you'll want to measure...

  • Can 2-1/4 Inch Long Shackle Straps be Used in Place of 2 Inch Long Shackle Straps on a Trailer
The only way to know for sure if the 1/4 inch longer shackle straps, # TRSL225 (compared to the 2 inch long # TRSL200) will be a problem is to install them. The longer straps will likely mean they will be at a steeper angle once installed and that could affect the travel of the suspension. I do recommend not chancing it and go ahead and get the correct shackle straps # TRSL200.

  • How to Find Correct Replacement Shackle Straps for Trailer
In regards to measuring shackle straps, you don't need to remove them to measure accurately. If they are still installed on the trailer simply measure from the center of each bolt head, the two most common are 2-1/4" part # TRSL225 and 3-1/8" part # TRSL313. It looks like you have the smaller 2-1/4" but you really ought to just measure yourself first.

  • Selecting Replacement Shackle Straps for 30-Foot Toy Hauler Trailer
Shackle straps are the most wear-prone part of a trailer suspension since they both carry weight and receive constant friction from the motion of the suspension. Shackle straps do not carry specific weight capacities, unlike the leaf springs they suspend. To select replacements all you need to do is match their length. The amount of leafs do not matter as much as long as the spring is rated for your axle capacity. I recommend TruRyde Shackle Link part # TRSL225. The shackle straps are 2-1/4" long. You said "about" 25 inches in length so I'll give you a couple options for what might work depending on the exact length you have, and if you want to go to a higher-rated, 7k leaf spring. Also, you'll want your replacement springs to be a bit shorter because leaf springs stretch over time. If you happen to have leaf springs a bit longer than 25 inches (say 25-1/2 inches) you can use the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e78SR.
