It is recommended to use Loctite RTV 598 High-Performance Silicone Gasket Maker - Black - 2.7-Fl Oz Tube # LT37467 when installing the Kat's Heaters Custom Fit Engine Block Heater - Cartridge Style - 120V - 400 Watts # KH11812.
It will help keep moisture and solid debris out of the mounting area and will have the added benefit of helping transfer heat from the heater to the engine block for a faster warm up process.
There is no specific amount to use really, use some compressed air to blow out the area. Then apply a thick coating of the high heat silicone to the heater and then install it. You can then clean up any that is excess if you wish.
