Upgrading Trailer 7-Way Connector To an EZ Connect Wiring Harness

Published 12/31/2021

Question:

I have a lot of trouble with the brakes on my RV travel trailer. The brake controller randomly shows overload. The blades on the trailer side plug look tarnished and are spread apart without closing back together. I solved this by cleaning and sanding the contacts on the 7-blade flat plug with emery cloth and squeezing blades back together. Every few weeks the problem reoccurs. I want a better solution. Would replacing the connectors on the vehicle and trailer with round pins be a good solution or just replacing with a higher quality flat blade connector on the trailer side?

If you are going to change connectors the EZ Connector Magnetic 7-Way Trailer Connector # 319-S7-10 would be the route I recommend going. Unlike your 7-way blade and 7-way round connectors this connector does not have any form of tension connector that can wear out over time. The connection pins sit against each other with no connector sitting around the pin that may become loose.

For the vehicle side there are a few options but the most common being the EZ Connector Custom Vehicle Wiring Harness # 319-S7-06. If you are unsure you can check our fit guide for your specific vehicle or check for the same round connector on the back of your tow vehicle. An Adapter # 319-R7-52 can be used if you have another trailer with a 7-way connector that needs pulled but do not want to change out its harness for the EZ Connector.

Some Dielectric Grease # 11755 can be used to reduce the the corrosion that builds up on the 7-way connector but this will not fix the issue with the connector spreading apart.
